Austin City Council set to vote on $1.18 million guaranteed basic income plan | Fox News

Quote:

The Austin City Council is set to vote Thursday on a $1.18 million guaranteed basic income pilot program that will give 85 families $1,000 of taxpayer funds a month for a year.

Basic income is a government-funded policy that provides regular cash payments to citizens with no strings attached.

If approved, Austin's local government will partner with the California non-profit UpTogether to administer the program and analyze the results once the year-long trial run is complete.

"The evaluation will include analysis of survey and interview data, as well as additional case studies with participants seeking to make recommendations and measure impact in key areas such as economic mobility, social capital, and housing stability," the city council's agenda item says
If you voted for this progressive ****, do you support this *****

When your policies hurt so many people, just spend more money to ease the pain for a year.

They tabled it. Might be illegal under Texas law. Not that it will stop them, but it is something.

I remember when I lived in the area one night on the local news they were interviewing some random liberal chick who was griping that she had to move to Pflugerville or something because it got too expensive for her to live in Austin after all the tax proposals she herself voted for passed. Hilarious.

Hahaha so utterly stupid. A sample size of 85 out of a city with roughly 410,000 households (2019 number).

So you are giving 85 families a free $12k/yr and then you're going to compare how their finances compare to 409,915 other families who didn't get a free $12k? Let me guess, they will be $12k better off as they will have no material impact on inflationary tendencies in the city. Now expand that trial to 85,000….. your city will be in a inflationary death spiral.

We are governed by the dumbest people who have ever lived.

Between growing Inflation and a looming Recession I would think that this is not a wise expenditure of the communities tax moneys.

But, then I live in the real world and I am not a complete dumbass.

State should carve up Travis County areas not in Austin and attach them to surrounding counties. Austin itself should be disbanded and made into a State District like DC under the jurisdiction of the Legislature. Problem solved.

So it will cost $160,000 somehow to distribute $1000 to 85 families for 12 months?

Super.

85 families receiving 1,000 a month for a year is 1.02 million not 1.18m.

Should be rejected on math alone. Who's getting the other 160k? That's a hell of a markup handling fee.

And I'm sure the non-profit UpTogether will absolutely be unbiased and neutral in their "analysis" of the program's effectiveness.

It's even worse than mentioned. They're pushing UBI as a part of public safety spending. It was a public safety workgroup recommendation after they defunded APD.
