There are a bunch of obscenely unqualified black people, Hispanics, gays, trans people, pedophiles, etc. who have been placed in all kinds of key positions in the military and DoD simply because they are black, Hispanic, gay, trans, pedophiles, etc. Diversity is our strength, until we get blown up. This country is circling the drain at all levels because of these policies. I'll be amazed if we make another 20 years.

I think the Pentagon may be missing a paradigm shift in warfare and weapons. Physical weapons will always be important, but virtual weapons will likely be a key differentiator in the next war.

AI's have come a long way in strategic decision making ability and could eventually outpace people in many areas, and we med embrace that by augmenting our war fighters with it where we can. Part of that is understanding the technology, and another part is developing it and staying ahead.

I think great examples are Al****o and AlphaStar. These AI's have proven an ability to learn and play incredibly complex games and defeat the best of the best human players even on even playing fields (forced to move a mouse as opposed to much faster programmatic interaction). These are games, but conceptually they are simply competitions like combat. Give a good enough AI enough time in a simulator and real air to air combat and they will eventually smoke human pilots. Take the ability of an AlphaStar type AI to strategically employ multiple unit types and capabilities to achieve an objective and give it a drone swarm and you have an effective, attritable battlefield commander and unit capable of employing its own troops and responding and adapting to novel scenarios with little risk to human soldiers.

Another aspect is simply security in architecture. It had not been the priority it needs to be from what I have read from shine of the individuals mentioned.

Data aggregation and processing is another area. The fog of war can be partially lifted through aggregation and processing of disparate data. A big handicap for battlefield commanders is information overload and prioritizing information. AI can certainly help with that, but that kind of augmentation requires support, attention, and R&D to get off the ground.

Exactly, if you actually enjoy creating new technology and being cutting edge, you would have to go work at SpaceX or one of the War / Jet companies to actually design and produce things.

No doubt the Pentagon would benefit from structural change. However, I don't see it as a race between the military and the commercial sector, but rather a partnership. I'm not aware of the DOD actually pushing the frontiers of technological innovation -- they contract with defense companies (and increasingly non-defense) for the products and services they wish to acquire. Yes, the DOD has to be up to speed on technological developments and definitely has a (large) voice in guiding innovation that is needed for defense, However it is the commercial sector, universities, government research labs, etc. that do the heavy lifting when it comes to actual innovation. If we fall behind the Chinese in AI , it's most likely because Google (for example) refuses to share their technology with DOD (which has actually happened, believe it or not). Anyway, my 2 cents.

Let Musk work the problems? Why not? Of course he may not want to work with them and I wouldn't necessarily blame him if he didn't. I dated a super computer genius in the early 80s. DOD was always after him to go to work for their designated contractors, but he was a pacifist kind of guy who did not want to apply his kills to making or improving weapons of war.

I don't at all support skin deep diversity, but there is certainly a place in the DoD for a lot of people who probably don't fit in the rank and file.

For instance, who gives a **** what someone looks like or who they **** if they're an AI expert or bleeding edge data scientist? That person could certainly make a worthwhile contribution to strategic planning, development, or acquisitions, and if we look at leading tech companies who are developing a lot of technology that is conceptually applicable to military problems, there are certainly a lot of these people in that space.

Turing is a perfect example. He made huge contributions to computing and project Ultra, but he was gay. He may not have been a soldier, but he certainly contributed to lethality through cryptanalysis and code breaking. Many women did as well. Did they bring in the front lines in combat arms? No. Should they have been completely barred from contributing? Also no.

I think the way that diversity is being pursued is often counterproductive, but I can also see ways in which an acceptance of diversity does offer lethality by leveraging America's full talent pool. They're similar but very different concepts. The problem is radical critical theorists injecting their politics and divisiveness into diversity and turning into a divisive handicap instead of an advantage.

Straight white people are the majority of the population in this country. When you automatically eliminate them from consideration, what do you think happens?

Not a shock that the private sector is outpacing the Pentagon in these areas. I've found that there's very little that the gov't can do better than the private sector except waste money in untold quantities.

When you combine that with the Biden admin's bent towards turning the military into a social justice experiment, its no shock that talented people who want to advance both themselves and science head for the hills.

I think a major issue is that young talent will take a lower paying job before they go to work for DOD. It isn't just liberal college students being liberal college students, it is talented young people across the political spectrum having a total lack of respect for our government bureaucracy. They view all govt institutions (R & D) as unethical. And FYIit will get worse because pretty much all of the Zoomers have this view. They aren't going to work for the govt unless they want to siphon off the system

Put me in the side of: not worried about this.

Senior leadership turnover happens constantly, especially at the pentagon, and DIA specifically.

Frankly, the DIA is not, really, cutting edge and hasn't been for a long time. What have they produced/advocated for that has...worked real well for either strategy or weapons systems in the past 30 years? No DDG searching, just ask yourself that.

Private industry will always outpace innovation in the government/military. Hopefully, some of those ideas are adopted, but sometimes the intersection/confluence (see: Rand corp.) is a bit scary. Whenever you have a guy though, like Dunlap, who made something in the low $200K's I think, in charge of a $70 billion budget...well, you're gonna see some interesting politics/lobbying/turnover, especially when they are on their way out the door, frustrated and...perhaps motivated to strike up a 'change' discussion they could benefit from.

Anyway, I take his missive with a grain of salt. He coulda spoken up about boondoggles like the LCS, ABMS or various wasteful projects way before he resigned.

We shouldn't care if someone is white, brown, black, polka dotted, straight, or queer. All we should care about is are they smart, well qualified, and the best person for the job.

One problem with the government/private partnerships is that some of these private companies have openly stated that they aren't sharing innovations with DoD. Meanwhile China has infiltrated those same companies and is stealing the tech. Wokeness isn't just irritating it's a national security issue. Until our brilliant young scientists and engineers realize that China and other rogue nuclear countries are a much greater threat to earth than climate change the brain drain is likely to continue.

There was a story posted on this board a couple of years ago about a government organization whose purpose was to future think and determine where resources should be allocated to. I seem to recall that Obama had shut it down, which put us about 10 years behind the curve. Anyone recall the name of that organization?

Whites make up 76% of this country. When you commit to only hiring minorities and LGBT transgender freaks, you're missing out on 76% percent of the population, which includes some very smart people.

I used to own a company with around 25 employees. Most of my employees were women. Through the years I hired Blacks, Hispanics, American Indian, gays ... people of all sorts. The only thing that mattered to me was performance. I couldn't care less about race, gender, sexual preference. Just do the job.
