If you are wearing a mask, the primary benefit, as small as it is, is the protection it offers to others to limit any pathogens/disease that the person wearing the mask may otherwise spread. The protection it gives to the wearer from becoming infected is miniscule. Yet there are still significant numbers of people wearing masks thinking they are protecting themselves from getting sick.
