Amazon signs rocket deal with Blue Origin, Arianespace, ULA for Project Kuiper internet satellites (cnbc.com)

Looks like Bezos wants to take on Elon's Starlink. Interesting and somewhat humorous that Amazon won't use SpaceX for rides.

Good. Starlink can't implement fast enough to satisfy demand. I looked in to it the other day and the website wanted $99 deposit for an install date in 2023 or later at a cost of $110/mo. That's not a good deal in any way. Internet service in populated areas is $50/mo and installed the next day.

And if you don't live in a populated area it's a great deal compared to what other satellite companies offer.

Maybe so, if you can get it provisioned. Brazoria County TX, 2023 or later. That seems kinda open-ended.

So like I said, "good". More options, more competition, maybe faster availability. All good things.

Try living in rural America where there is NO local provider. We were stuck using a hotspot that ran over $300 a month based on data use. Starlink is the only provider of reliable, high speed internet for much of the country/world.

That means your cell is currently full and they don't want to oversell their service which is a good thing. Also, it's not meant for people who live in urban areas or have access to good internet.

Love Elon and Starlink but more options and competition is almost always better.

You do realize that Bezos owns Blue Origin, right? And that he ****ing HATES Elon Musk? Pretty sure he'd rather take his space dild...I mean, suborbital rocket up the @$$ before flying anything on SpaceX.

We live in rural East TX & Starlink is amazing.

We had line of site service before - our house had to see an antenna on a neighbor's house that had to see the one on a water tower a couple miles away - the absolute best we could get was 10 down & 2 up for $80/month, and that was if no neighbors were on at the same time. Forget about watching tv around 10pm when people were checking stuff before bed. Sadly LOL.

Just ran a speed test & it's definitely worth the money!

edit to add: We put down our deposit, got an email saying mid-2023. Got an email a week later that the equipment was on the way. Not sure how that happened, its not like we know Elon or anything, but I guess our area isn't full. Installation was super easy.

Wow. I have a WeBoost antenna and a cellular modem. I get nowhere near that.

I reserved in March '21. My account says they will expand to my area in mid '22. Nothing yet.

We got my mom T-Mobile wireless 5G broadband internet for her home in Horseshoe Bay. It's only $50/month, available now, and getting speeds around 150 mbps. She paying close to that for dsl with 1.5 mbps speed.

Yeah, Jeeper, its gonna be whomever can provide me with better than the line-of-sight service mentioned earlier. Even in the Houston burbs, I can only get 100Mbps. If I can get 5G home service, I will get it. If not and I can get Starlink, I will get it.

Otherwise, I will be bogging down the previous poster's bandwidth buffering 4k content. Fortunately, I am just building now so it will be a few months before it becomes an immediate issue.

Competition is a good thing, and rural customers don't have a lot of options.

My parents spend about $200 per month on HughesNet Plus or whatever the higher speed is.

They get about 15-20 mbit down, but the ping is terrible of course.

The biggest issue is that I checked their monthly data allotment and they get 75 Gig per month 8 am - 6 Pm, then 200 Gig at night.

My kids would consume most of that in 2-3 days.

Snark incoming:

While a vast improvement for that area, that speed on 5G is no where near revolutionary as we've all been told it would be. Again, its all relative so that's plenty fast for her though, I'm sure.

5G is fake news for me in Dallas. No reason to get it for probably quite a while.

I know several people that put down the deposit and it said 2023, but they got it within 30 days.

Rollout speed should increase as SpaceX builds out the 2nd gen of Starlink satellites with laser communications between units. Right now you have to live within proximity of a ground node so the satellite can view you and the ground node simultaneously. Once the units in orbit can communicate with one another (much faster than earth to satellite rates) the reliance on ground nodes as an intermediary will go away.

How quickly they can get these units in orbit depends not only on F9 launch cadence but I think maybe also on getting them into orbital Starship launches.
