A New Jersey university is launching what it called the world's first "Master of Arts in Happiness Studies."

Centenary University's program will "explore the implications of happiness for individuals, the workplace, and our broader society," according to the college's announcement. It's set to launch virtually in the fall and will cost students $17,700.

Probably more useful than a degree in Women's Studies or Gender Studies.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

"How Happiness Happens" by Max Lucado better be part of the curriculum. Otherwise, the master's program is not creditable.

Not knowing anything else, I would hire someone out of that program LONG before I would hire someone out of a _____ (race) studies or _____ (gender/other) studies program. At the very least, these individuals would be expected to treat people well and teach others to do the same. If they can do that, they might have a place in an organization where that is (usually) lacking.

This is just more crap labeled "academia" so that more liberal arts people can be employed.

And I blame the both the student loan industry and colleges and universities which entice ignorant people to get these loans and enroll in worthless classes for worthless degrees.

The issue is how you induce people to make that choice while working for you. Turnover costs money. Unhappy employees are unmotivated, and unmotivated employees are unproductive employees.

I actually understand the impulse to see "liberal arts program" with something as fluffy sounding as happiness studies and automatically dismiss it is more academia nonsense. However in this case I couldn't think of a more relevant topic to study than human flourishing with a very obvious corporate use case like a serious academic endeavor to understand what makes us happy.

In my experience managing humans, happy employees tend to make good and productive employees. So, there's at least an obvious business case to this. Then there's the whole line of thinkers from classic Greek philosophers, the stoics, all world religions, etc that have endeavored to answer this question.

Happiness studies is far more relevant, universal, and real world practical than almost everything else in the liberal arts umbrella.

It's in the same vein as giving people unlimited vacation. I'm sure most here think it's a stupid idea that wastes money, but firms that do it find their employees are happier, more productive, and actually take fewer days because they don't feel pressured you use it or lose it.

The days of, "Just be glad you have a job," are gone, and many companies are realizing that just getting a paycheck is not motivating and is not going to keep people performing or even staying long term enough to recoup the costs of recruitment, on boarding, and integration into the with environment. If you want people to do more than just enough to not get fired, you have to keep them happy and bought in.

It is called leadership which is sorely lacking in today's corporate world.

People always mistake management for leadership. One can be a good manager but poor leader but a good leader will always be a good manager.
