Is it? Why is the world allowing this to happen?

Russia has nukes?

We knew this was coming. The world saw this coming for a long time.

Why did we allow it to happen?

What's our response in terms of our long-term strategy?

Ukraine isn't in NATO and we have no strategic interest there.

Defend NATO if it gets attacked.

The world has been unusually peaceful for the past 80 years and that's coming to an end. This isn't the last time we'll be horrified. If you don't want to be taken over by a bigger nation you need to either be able to fight it off yourself or be strategically important to the United States. We'll see with Taiwan how much protection the latter actually affords a nation.
The federal government was never meant to be this powerful.

I didn't think he would . I thought he could get what he wanted without having to invade . I now think there has been a lot of behind the scenes stuff happening that he felt like forced his hand. He's a very bad actor , no question about that but I feel like competent US leadership could have headed this off at the pass.

What I don't get is the lack of negotiation between the two countries before the invasion.

Taiwan makes 70% of the worlds computer chips so that's important to us. Ukraine is the #10 wheat producer so that's not.

The first question is whether China is willing to risk a war with us. It's a war they have no hope of winning and one that could end China as we know it.

I disagree. Competent leadership from the US only goes so far. Russia has a dying population and borders it can't defend at its current size. It becomes more vulnerable with each passing year. Rolling Ukraine into it's borders makes them more secure and it improves their food production. From Russias perspective it's must have territory.

Could it be argued to some degree that the invasion of Ukraine and the associated civilian deaths is just the latest example of the legacy of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and similar traitors from the cold war era?

We'll never know because we do not have competent leadership that puts American and American Allies interests first . It's not coincidental that Putin saves his invasions for a specific brand of US "leadership" imo .

He could certainly have secured food supplies without an invasion. I don't think an occupied and puppet Government in Ukraine will change their negative demographic trajectory as it's a product of their "system" . Granted , Putin may think
Otherwise .

Does Taiwan import the minerals to build the chips, or do they have an abundant supply?

It's the manufacturing process that is the bottleneck. Extremely complex and intricate.

The US is now building out the capacity as a result of COVID supply chain issues with this topic, thankfully.

All China has to do is wait another 5-10 years and we won't care about Taiwan as much.

Agree. Taiwan impacts the western world way of life. We will fight for our way of life.

That said, semi conductor companies are opening up manufacturing sites here in the states. Will it be enough to where Taiwan isn't such an important factor, not sure.

Ukraine is / was not a sympathetic country.

it has a lot of baggage & corruption & bad history.

there has certainly been a "romanticizing" of Ukraine now...particularly their government.

some people see through that. Others don't

"The world" currently has ongoing wars that are worse than what's going on in Ukraine.

"The world" currently has genocide and oppression and poverty the likes of which horror we haven't seen from Putin.

"The world" has seen the bloody redrawing of borders time and again.

The fact that this is a big deal while the media remains mum about so many other things makes me highly suspicious about it all.

There's nothing romantic about innocent people being murdered. That's called being a decent human being.

Does that mean that their government was perfect? No, but the doesn't matter. Putin changed a lot of Americans views about himself and Ukraine with his invasion, none of which benefit him or his ideology.

Then there's the Putin sympathizers in this country, which for the life of me doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

We don't have the required minerals in quantity. Unfortunately, China does. And Afghanistan.

The Democrats thought Russia would overrun the Ukraine in a few days. Then, they would be able to say, "There was nothing we could have done short of sending in our own troops.". Remember how there was nothing they could have done to stop the Taliban during the Afghan Exit debacle?

However, the Ukrainians proved to be effective fighters, delayed the Russian take over of Ukraine, and ruined the Biden's Administration's prepared script. It turns out there was plenty the U.S. could have done AND plenty we could still do way short of sending in our own troops.

The EU and the U.S. really have a problem when you overlay the conflict in Ukraine with:
  • the EU and U.S. disastrous Green Energy policie and war on oil and gas = energy shortages
  • supply chain fiasco
  • inflation
  • etc
I voted for this because I like Mean Tweets!

Correct. I was just posting as to why Taiwan is critical...for now. It's primarily the manufacturing aspect but you have to solve both issues.

Control of mineral resources is also why this administration are a bunch of brain dead morons (or traitors) for forcing adoption of electric vehicles.
halfastros81

They think they are forcing adoption of EV's. They aren't and it's unlikely to happen anytime soon if ever. The facts are the infrastructure doesn't exist to support it and it won't for some time. Not even getting in to the battery issues

40-50% of the neon used in the lithography steps of chip manufacturing comes from Ukraine. There could be supply chain issues if this drags out more than a couple of months.

If NATO is attacked. We attack. If Taiwan is attacked. We attack. We attack because those two impediments are what China and Russia needs to go through to get to the USA.

If we wait till they hit us first we will NEVER have a chance.
