….would be an act of war. Sec Def Austin said it would be.

How would establishing a no fly zone be an formal act of war when the host nation requests one.

Look I get that it puts opposing air forces together and if Russia decides to shoot they would pull us into this war.

It would be a good show of force to establish a 50 mile no fly zone along the border under the reason of protecting refugee and NATO is showing they can impose themselves and not be cowards.

If establishing a 59 mile no fly zone causes Putin to escalate into WW3 well heck he is going to find any reason to pull us all into WW3.

Maybe, but all you have to do is "brrrrtttttt" anyone who breaks that zone.

Of course, but there should be no reason if the NFZ is for humanitarian reasons.

Incursion of Russian military aircraft into Poland airspace right now would absolutely be a hostile military act, and those aircraft would likely be shot down or escorted out of Polish airspace.

No need for a No fly zone that extends into Ukraine.

I disagree, I believe that NATO has a humanitarian mandate to install a NFZ over western Ukraine. The free world cannot capitulate to a ruthless dictator and let said dictator annihilate citizens of a free nation.

Putin's initial plans were to take over the ethnic Russian portions of east Ukraine, not the entire country. It is understandable that people are scared to death of WW3, but being Chamberlain instead of Churchill is not the way to prevent it

We are about to join this once regional war. The US and many countries are touting how they are providing military weapons. Russia can look at that and call it an act of war. Soon they will likely respond. And then one NATO like Poland has to respond and WWIII is on. China and Russia and Iran, Turkey, Pakistan….on one side.

If nukes aren't used I like the good sides chances.

Turkey is NATO though.

How would that work?

Option 1. You let Russian planes fly in it. Well, I guess that's not a no fly zone.

Option 2. You shoot down Russian planes when they fly in the no fly zone. You've now got a no fly zone and you've also got WWIII.

It is inevitable, time to move forward.

Take control of the skies. Massive air offensive from the west. Keep control. Let the ground fight. I dont believe Putin will shoot nukes for a ground war. Let them fight, keep supply line open from the west.

Turkey actually has helped Ukraine with supplying Drones.

How long will much of the world's population watch in real time the destruction of a sovereign nation and the massacre of its people before a confrontation with Putin results or he is deposed?

You don't just declare a no-fly zone, just like Michael Scott can't just yell "I declare bankruptcy"

You would have to enforce it, and that would result in our air force and Russia's airforce in direct conflict. It would only escalate from there.

Given that both sides estimate around 10k or less dead between the two of them, Russia is a nuclear power, and we have no power to depose Putin, I'm guessing we'll be willing to watch for quite a bit longer. In fact it's kind of must see coverage as we root on the underdogs.

100s of thousands died in the Syria conflict, we armed a side there too, and hardly any of us watched in real time or much cared. So Ukrainians have that going for them.

Hear hear.

Hey let's "establish" a no fly zone!

Just a few A-10's would take care of it!

While we're at it, let's establish a "no invasion zone" in Ukraine.

You're welcome
