6.2% with employer match. My 401k is matched to 6.0%. Its nothing more than an additional income tax redistributed to those at the bottom. I'd be able to retire 15 years earlier if that money went into a personal retirement account. It's way past time to privatize social security.

Thing is, the government knows how to manage your money better than you do.

Just ask them....

Would you be ok with severe limitations on it? If you are free to invest it however you please, then it won't work.

I don't see a single politician, D or R, daring to even attempt to touch Social security in order to weaken/abolish it. We will ride that anchor doen until the nation collapses.

People are too stupid and undisciplined to do it on their own. It's for their own good. The tat and cigarette lobby would like to get rid of it though…..

The problem is Social Security in todays standard is not being used for what it was intended to be used for.

When it was created people worked until the day they died, or until they were physically unable to. With modern medicine people are living longer and living off it for far too long. It was never intended to pay for people to live off of it for 30+ years like many do.

I know someone who's mom came here from another country and collects social security. Never worked in the US a day of her life. Not sure how that works.

Don't go quietly on this. The government can print trillions of dollars because of a head cold but are going to screw young people out of benefits they deserve. Light a fire under the politicians that want to do that. It's total BS

I doubt it, maybe 4-5; the tax gets capped as you get older and start making real money.

No , it was fine until technology started increasing the average life expectancy. If people lived as long (or as short) as they did back in FDR's day, it would still be OK.

Life expectancy in 1940 was 60. Its almost 80 now. That's a huge number of people to support that are not working.

This. It also was not intended to be a total retirement package, only a supplement

Well it's working just like it was planned to work.. take another 12.4% from you and your employers pockets so that they can do what they want with the money, it was never about helping you later in life, if it was we wouldn't be in the situation that we are in today..

That is true. But it is also true that the government has robbed the fund of billions over the past 4 decades

If not abolished, a much better program would be taking the money out the same way, and then parking it in an index fund for the S&P500.

What do you think the Gov't is using to pay Illegals?!

They are getting SSI benefits distributed and not only have they never worked here... they legally aren't supposed to be here.

Also, SSI abuse is a major issue, even for those here legally. I know one person who has been on it for 15 years and the guy is able bodied. He works for cash on the side too.

this is correct. just like minimum wage, the age for getting social security should also increase. it should be about 72 or 73 now.

It sucks but it's best to ignore it for any financial planning purposes. That way, if you get it, it's nice surprise.

It will never be fixed. W tried and was massively rebuffed. You will never see another President attempt it again.

Absolutely. If they had done that early on, we'd be solvent.
