Oklahoma's Inhofe confirms he is resigning US Senate seat (msn.com)

Quote:

Oklahoma's U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, says he will step down before his six-year term is up and that he is "absolutely" at peace with the decision.

In an interview published Friday by The Oklahoman, the 87-year-old Inhofe said he and his wife, Kay, "have decided that we need to have time together."

Inhofe has held the seat since 1994 and his departure will trigger a special election for his replacement.

"I didn't make a solid decision until two or three weeks ago," Inhofe told the newspaper. "There has to be one day where you say, 'All right, this is going to be it.'"

Inhofe, who was elected to a fifth Senate term in 2020, said he will continue to serve until the next Congress begins in January.

The timing of Inhofe's announcement is related to a quirk in Oklahoma law that requires the governor to call a special election if a lawmaker announces they intend to retire before March 1. The special election would be held concurrently with the statewide primary, runoff and general election, part of the nation's midterms.

I really like Sen. Inhofe but I can't fault him for leaving, especially at 87.

I would be just fine with no one over the age of 80 being able to run for any election.

Good guy. But 87 really is too old for anyone to serve in Congress, POTUS, or Supreme Court. Age restrictions and term limits were overlooked by the Founders. I suppose they didn't think it would be all that common for people to live this long.
Let's go, Brandon!

Or that people would make lifetime careers in politics. We desperately need term limits, and age restrictions.

Everyone knows that life begins at age 87.

Go get 'em, tiger.
Elections are when people find out what politicians stand for, and politicians find out what people will fall for.

It shouldn't even be financially possible.

100% agree. Politics should not be a career. It should be a temporary assignment.

No Congress person should be allowed to serve more than two terms…whether this fossil or Vodka Pelosi or Chucky Satan…

This, as much as anything, is what is wrong with this country and it's political system. Career congresspeople are the problem…PERIOD.

Congress set the "retirement age" at 65 and therefore that age should be observed for them as well.

Maybe someone has something on him.

He didn't vote to defund the vaccine mandates a few days ago and now this.

To me, that's sounds like code for either him or his wife got a bad diagnosis and now they're going to spend their remaining days together.

Awesome, hopefully Oklahoma can produce a younger Ted Cruz type.

Thanks for your service, and for resigning so you don't have to claim to be able to perform those duties into your 90's, Sen. Inhofe.

He's been such a RINO, maybe Oklahoma can get an actual conservative in there.

The Dem that ran against him in the last election was the one who just got trashed at a teenager's Valentines party and berated the teen girls and puked in one of them's shoe and a laundry basket. Then lied about ever being there despite tons of photo evidence. She sure picked a bad time to go off the deep end.

Oklahoma, like Utah/Alaska, has a kind of weird history of idiot Republican senators. I knew folks who knew Coburn's medical practice around Tulsa who said he was a real dirt bag too. Don't just run some retread/old guy a la Cornyn, Oklahoma;

Quote:

If Inhofe does retire, there are reportedly a number of Republicans who are being looked at as potential candidates. Politico reported that Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell, former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon, and a few others would consider running for the seat.

Ah well, here's to hoping!
