Shooting Erupts At Popular Mexican Beach Resort Again As Cartel Turf-War Escalates

Tourists at a restaurant in the popular Mexican beach resort of Tulum were caught in the crossfire when a terrifying shootout interrupted their vacations.

According to local news Riviera Maya News, two people were killed and a third wounded at the luxurious Art Beach restaurant on Saturday night shortly after 2100 local time. Two young men were killed, and another was injured.

Readers have been well aware of the uncontrolled violence that affects the Quintana Roo state, which includes Cancun, Cozumel, and Tulum. Shootings are occurring increasingly in tourist areas where some have been killed.

Last month, two Canadians were shot dead by an unknown gunman at a ritzy resort near Cancun. In November last year at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera hotel, south of Cancun, hundreds of tourists witnessed a shootout between rival drug gangs. The frequency of attacks comes as drug cartels try to secure turf in popular resort towns to pedal drugs to tourists.

Time for the Mexican President to call the leader of the cartels and have a chit chat with him.

I 1000% believe both the Mexican and US governments could stop the cartels if the wanted to, but there's too much money in it, so they give them areas to play and areas to stay out of. Some morons took the fun into the wrong area, and now their bodies will be dumped in an empty field 57 miles from nowhere.

1. We have people getting killed everyday for drugs in the US. What your seeing is cartel members getting killed while on vacation.

2. The shooting at Xcaret was Canadian from an Asian gang gangsters getting killed by Mexican cartel.

3. Tulum shooting is interesting. We were there in January and there is a drug dealer at every restroom in every restaurant and club. They are selling party drugs and I assume it's just a matter of time before a turf war breaks out.

Not on Galveston Island or in Destin, FL during the summer vacation, we don't.

You may want to rethink your comparisons.
Galveston is not exactly a safe Mecca. It's more violent than most of America. How many Americans have been killed or shot in the Cancun area?

Show me the numbers that say it's not safe to visit.

Breitbart and others do a lot more reporting on this area and the cartel activity and at the border. It is a war zone. The same exact lifecycle absolutely destroyed Acapulco 20 years ago. And it will end up killing this area as well.

No...this isn't violence on a cartel member taking a vacation. This is carter on cartel violence as they both encroach more and more and closer and into the areas they never went before. They used to stay away from visitor hotels and restaurants...no longer.

They are fighting for territory to provide the drugs to the American and European vacationers who think because it's Mexico they should buy their drugs at cut rate prices.

Hey, as long as they are not targeting Americans, its ok to be inside bar or on the beach in Mexico during a gun fight between cartels. Americans are immune to those bullets. /eye roll

The shooting at Xcaret was absolutely the cartel killing a Canadian drug dealer.

Your last comment I agree with. Tulum is a bohemian/live and let live kinda place so drugs are pretty free flowing. In the past 5 years tourism has spiked, thus the street selling of drugs has spiked. Anytime drugs sales goes up, so does the street war.

Mexico needs to send more Federales into the area but it's still safer for Americans than most large American cities.

I'd be fine with buying drugs at American prices when vacationing.
The important thing is the drugs, not trying to get bargain basement prices while vacationing in another country.

Of course we could. We can take out an Iranian general at an airport on the other side of the planet. We certainly could take out a few narco capitans on the other side of the border. The cartels are more dangerous to average Americans than the Iranian general was.

We don't want to stop the drug war and neither does Mexico. It's probably their top industry, who knows. And there are tons of jobs in the US based on that war. The US makes over 10 million arrests each year for drug offenses. That's a lot of law enforcement officers, judges, clerks, etc... employed.

I think it's more complicated. One, its about saving face. If we had to use the military to crack down on the cartels it implies (rightly) that CBP, FBI, etc in the US and the government of Mexico don't have the situation under control, and that's bad politically on both side of the border. Most Americans know little of what goes on on the border or the role that cartels play in human trafficking, drugs, etc. No one wants an open war on the southern border even if it means we are slowly losing the hidden one. It's also financial. A military reaction would disrupt trade with Mexico and they are a pretty significant trade partner. Third, the cartels have a pretty potent army and they would hit back. Things would escalate and it could get pretty bloody at least for a while. Again, that would not play well politically. As usual, politicians and bureaucrats are more comfortable with the status quo. Pretty easy for them since they aren't consuming tainted meth, getting rear-ended by paper-plate bandits, or getting murdered by cartel soldiers.
