Beckel first joined Fox News in 2000 as a contributor providing political analysis and rejoined the network in 2011 as one of the original hosts of "The Five."

When "The Five" premiered in July 2011, it was only supposed to have a five-week run to temporarily fill the timeslot. Instead, the show stuck around and has become one of the highest-rated shows in all cable news.

Beckel was there during the inception of "The Five" with Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld, who still co-host the long-running program.

I've been trying to remember for the last hour - why did he finally get the boot? I remember his last few appearances, he was a mess. Was it drugs?

Not positive but I believe so.

I think he was abusing some substance again. He quit because he was mad at being questioned/the only liberal/left voice on the show.

I kind of found him entertaining, much more so than Juan Williams etc. Just an honest old school liberal. He fought demons throughout his life though, like many of us. T/P.

He openly professed being a Christian despite being so liberal and supporting those that don't tolerate Christians
I pray thr lord caught him in a moment and snatched him up like I believe he did to Whitney Houston so he could be in heaven.

One thing Beckel did admit before he died: certain liberal policies for minorities failed, e.g. public housing.

He was better than Juan, though his insane sticktoitiveness for lib idiocy, even in the face of reality (that it sucks, always and forever), made me yell at the screen often.

Hope his family can be strong at this sad time.

I remember him. I liked him. He was a gruff, no nonsense dude. His only flaw is that he was a Democrat.

He basically got turned out though, due to political correctness.
