Something that's often (always?) overlooked is the fact that the Arab world had legal slavery until recent times, and on a de facto basis right up to the present.
Saudi Arabia had legal slavery until 1962, Oman until 1970. Mauritania keeps on outlawing slavery because the laws don't seem to take too well.
Wonder if the Nation of Islam ever weighed in on that (no, actually I don't wonder at all).
Not to mention that the arabs started the African slave trade in the 800s and it didn't ever truly end if you consider the enslavement of Sudanese by arabs during the Sudan civil war as part of it.
Never forget that European nations (including descendant nations like USA and Latin America) were the last to enter the African slave trade and the first to abolish it. Then our nations went on to pressure other countries into outlawing slavery.
Yet we get all the flack.
You're welcome, entire world, for ending slavery.
