How does four days on, three days off sound?

Nearly a quarter of the members of the U.S. House of Representatives are throwing their support behind a proposal aiming to institute a national 32-hour workweek policy, according to a Wednesday announcement.

Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., said his "32 Hour Workweek Act" would reduce the standard workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours by lowering the maximum hours threshold for overtime compensation for non-exempt employees under the Fair Labor Standards Act. While it wouldn't mandate 32-hour weeks for all, those working beyond that mark would be entitled to overtime pay under his proposed changes.

Takano says the bill has earned the backing of the nearly 100 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is intended to begin a national transition "toward a modern-day business model that prioritizes productivity, fair pay and an improved quality of life for workers across the country."

"After a nearly two-year-long pandemic that forced millions of people to explore remote and shouldn't simply go back to normal, because normal wasn't working," Takano said in a news release.
"People were spending more time at work, less time with loved ones, their health and well-being was worsening, and all the while, their pay has remained stagnant. This is a serious problem. It's time for progress, and I am confident that with the CPC behind this bill, we can take meaningful steps forward and create positive, lasting change in people's lives."

The Hill reports
groups across several countries have experimented with the shortened workweek, with some showing positive signs. A major study of the four-day workweek in Iceland was declared a "major success" in a report issued by the think tank Alda and Autonomy.

"Participating workers took on fewer hours and enjoyed greater well-being, improved work-life balance and a better cooperative spirit in the workplace all while maintaining existing standards of performance and productivity," the report read.

Takano's proposal, however, is looking to reduce overall worker hours and enhance well-being and a better work-life balance for employees. That's a goal that Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., chairwoman of the Progressive Caucus, said she can get behind.

"For far too long, workers across this country have been forced to put in longer hours as their wages barely budge," Jayapal said in a statement. "It is past time that we put people and communities over corporations and their profits finally prioritizing the health, wellbeing, and basic human dignity of the working class rather than their employers' bottom line.

"The 32-hour workweek would go a long way toward finally righting that balance. I'm proud to join my Progressive Caucus colleagues in supporting Rep. Takano's bill and look forward to continuing the fight together to put power back into the hands of working people as we ensure every worker has good benefits, better conditions, and an equal voice on the job."
I don't see businesses, especially small businesses, paying the same pay for 32 hours that they pay for 40. With overtime kicking in at 32, I also see less overtime opportunities for employees.

I could be swayed on a 40 M-Th work week, but the 32 is stupid.

Big corporations can do this. Other businesses can't.

Just like raising taxes doesn't hurt rich, as much as it hurts middle class.

Instead of 1 employee working 40 hrs a week, you'll have 2 employees working 20 hrs a week...

Just trying to lower the middle class so that more persons require government assistance. Creates a need to hire more people but everyone is paid less. Yeah more people get beer if I add water to it but now it sucks.

I work half days every Friday. This was a choice done at my company though. Government shouldn't be dictating what a work week is at any company. That is part of the "package" that a company can offer an employee.

Get ready for mandatory WFH situations and the like next to "reduce our country's CO2 emissions". Screw these dumbasses.

Wait, if we're only getting 32 hours a week, $15/hr is no longer a living wage. We must raise the minimum wage comrades.

Let's be honest, no one actually works 40 hours per week. I see so many people when I walk around the office who find ways to not work like using their phone, etc.

Most people now have figured out that was is important is looking busy, not actually being busy.

The American Dream is finding a job with the highest pay and the least amount of responsibility/requirements.

32 hours of work a week?!

Healthcare, shelter, food, clothing, an iPhone, and annual vacation to an island of my choice are fundamental human rights. How are we still talking in this country about work requirements to obtain these things?

worked 4/10 out of college and it was great. By wednesday afternoon we were on cruise control. I don't see how only working 32 hours will work for many industries. doesn't France do something similar to this?

wait... so hourly workers aren't paid enough to support their lives or a "living wage" and so their representatives are going to turn around and force companies to cut their hours? while i try my best not to vilify the "other side" and try to find common ground, this one is just inane.

I'm all for it, at least for myself. If I go down to 4 days a week, maybe I'll get down to 40 hours a week as well.

Also, huge fan of three-day weekends.

Ummm, the economy prior to the pandemic was booming. More people actually working instead of sitting around collecting gov't bennies. More disposable income. Less crime. More minorities in the workforce, etc.

Now? We are all poorer due to rampant inflation, high gas prices, we have less choice due to supply chain issues because fewer people are working, etc.

To say that normal wasn't working with a straight face indicates a completely stupid person but we already know that's true of the "Congressional Progressive Caucus"

Man...I mean each policy its more and more damaging to this country's way of life.

Cutting to a 40 hr week guarantees everything. In every sector slows down.

Economy implosion, have a fire, you're ****ed, need a doctor for an emergent issue, hope you last 6 months.

I highly doubt my employer would keep paying me the salary I am at if I started working 8 hours less per week. It would be nice to have the extra day off, but I'd rather have the extra money instead tbh.

For example, if you make 100,000 a year and drop to 32 hours per week, your salary now becomes 80,000 if your employer decides to pay you by hours worked.

Calcs:
2080 hours per year under 40 hour weeks
1664 hours per year under 32 hour weeks

100,000 annual salary / 2080 = 48.08/hour
48.08 x 1664 = 80,000 and some change

Normal works just fine you asshat if the federal government and all the state level covidians would get the hell out of the way and allow it to return to normal.

Never let a crisis go to waste. Covid19 has been the mother of all crisis for the progressive left to enact their anti-American agenda. They ain't letting it go without a fight.
