I haven't lived in Texas in about 40 years, so I have to get my insight from news media and family members still living in Texas. From what I see from the outside, it looks like Abbott has done a more decent job (during Covid) of protecting liberty in the State than most governors out there. It seems a lot of his policies mirror those of DeSantis, who is pretty popular in FL.

But I see polls showing how unpopular he is, and I was recently shocked to hear my conservative parents call him "Governor Goofy" and tell me they may consider Beto.

What is it that is making him so unpopular? Electricity blackouts? Just been there too long? What is it?

Administratively good, but doesn't come across as a leader. Normally that would be okay but we are in trying times. One has to wonder if DeSantis wasn't leading the way would Abbott have stuck to his guns on the anti vax mandates etc.

Abbott's covid mandates made lots of people very mad. He gained lots of ground back starting in March, but lost it IMO by not supporting legislation to ban the covid vaccine as condition of employment

There isn't a single conservative person considering my Mexican slave named me as a young boy I'll take your guns Beto.

His Covid mandates killed a bunch a small businesses and restaurants. People haven't forgotten about this.

Well, your parents are probably old so they wont have to deal much with the tyranny that comes from that vote. My Dad voted for Obama the first time. I didn't call him an idiot for doing so, but he was.

Remember - the same media machine that worked so hard to purge Trump from office doesn't change it's stripes on local politics. They spin hard here, too.

Abbott has tried to play the Bush game - bluster conservative and toss a few bones that way while playing nice with his Democrat friends and trying to appease the leftist media.

So there are valid complaints about him being unprincipled and not a true conservative (where is he in crushing DA's and Mayors who are abusing their positions?)... but to take those complaints and turn toward a leftist that the media works hard to prop up... that's just lunacy.

There's not a single friendly major news source in texas. it's confirmed local TV news doesn't strive for objectivity. The papers sure don't.

Even in texas, Republicans must fight through incredibly biased and slanted reporting while dems like beto are built up and presented as something they are not- ie. Beto is presented as some sort of Latino moderate when he is really some rich white dude with far left policy prescriptions.

He's not perfect, but voting him out in the primary is a HUGE mistake! Most voters are dolts. They do little to no research and vote on name recognition. Abbott's certainly not perfect, and doesn't stand up in comparison to DeSantis, but who does?

I conservative Texan wants common sense aggressive action in the face of a tyrannical national government. Abbott works too hard at being a politician, with his wet finger up in the wind. Succinctly put, that's madness.

You can give a mulligan if you must to any for last year because of the "blizzard of lies" from all sides. But anyone voting Democrat next year is voting to abolish liberty and to install coercive socialism if not outright collectivism and is not and never really was anything but left of center.

You should persuade them to just abstain and not ruin the future for the mid-aged and the young if they are so feelings driven by Abbott's not being DeSantis -- not being another person. Think of how absurd that sounds.

Spot on. If he were smart he would call a special session after Thankgiving specifically to pass anti-mandate legislation like they did in Florida. It would help his poll numbers going into the election year.

Having said that, he's the clear choice if he wins the primary. From a policy standpoint, Beto would be the Texas version of Biden.
