Did I miss something here? She was caught off camera and off air, saying that she wished Maria Taylor (who happens to be black) all the best but she doesn't want her to take her spot hosting the NBA Finals?

What else am I missing here? A very competitive industry, a TV personality doesn't want an up and coming TV personality to take her job? And now she has to publicly make an apology, she is removed from hosting said NBA Finals and now a headline from virtually every major news outlet?

What in the actual F is controversial or racist about that???

The controversy is the insinuation from a white woman that the lower-ranking black woman is only moving up the ladder because of her skin color.

well it IS ESPN. Just sayin.

You glossed over the part where Nichols said that she thought Taylor took her spot because ESPN needed a black person in a high profile spot because their diversity sucked. She also said that she thought she was a "diversity" person and therefore was frustrated that ESPN was forcing her out due to "diversity".

In today's world it's taboo to come out and complain about being on the diversity chopping block. If you are forced out due to someone higher up on the victim food chain you are expected to shut up and take it

Nichols' assumption is likely right. All of us assume the same thing every day when we see black people in positions they're rarely in. It's the unfortunate result of affirmative action and exactly why so many black people were against it back then - it discounts those that actually achieve on merit.

That sheds some more light on the situation....still ridiculous though, particular when she thought her comments were made in private.

There is no doubt that ESPN wants to promote black talent to more visible roles. Personally, I think Maria Taylor got the job on merit because she is good and absolutely beautiful. Race did help, but she's also better than Nichols to me.

Nichols complaining that someone got the job that she only got because she is a woman getting it because they are a black woman is fantastic. Liberals eating their own.

The irony in all this is that Nichols is a huge lib. I thought libs were all about diversity and promoting black women's rights in the name of racial equity!

very similar thing happened to my wife. Has won all sorts of awards from the feds- including last year winning attorney of the year for her region. Has her supervisors raving about her work- including the office head. Given a temporary promotion when a supervisor left. Again, given great reviews and basically had to run the office when the top person took vacation for a week and the other supervisor at that one level below was out. Basically did the job of 3 people. The permanent vacancy application process started and a person of preferable color applied from half way across the country. He got the job. Office head told her she could give her a raving review anytime..its f'd up.

I'd be pissed if I was a Disney stockholder to find out ESPN is willing to entertain paying Maria, Stephen A money when they know that Skip Bayless didn't bring any ratings to fox.

I would venture to guess that if she leaves for more money to another network she wouldn't bring any ratings.

. Except it's not even equal. Glad I'm not a white actor starting out because you don't have much chance of getting commercial work.

this is what makes this account unfortunate, cause maria taylor is actually better at her job than nichols.

And its common knowledge to everyone at espn that rachel nichols sleeps with athletes.

this is just another case of the old and worn out ***** getting jealous over the younger, more attractive talent.

Dead on. Have a friend who acts and that's 100% true. It's absurd. Shouldn't they want 13% black actors while they're trying to achieve "representativeness"?

I don't watch much of NBA or ESPN. This sounds like a workplace spat more than anything else. It is disappointing Americans may care more about this than the border crisis.

100%. Maria Taylor is really good at her job and Nichols is making it sound like its a race thing which is unfortunate. A lib like Nichols should know better. This is a case of the good looking, younger, up and comer, rising star getting the job over someone older and less attractive. Happens all the time in the corporate world, it just so happens that that Taylor is black. If taylor were white or someone like Erin Andrews, Nichols would have known whats up.

Muchos has it right in his post.

Maria is 6'2" tall, 155 pounds and in her mid 30's. Rachel is 5'5", 121 pounds and in her late 40's.

In a twist to the story, Butler only put Nichols in those positions because she is white.

This is inevitable with even unofficial pushes to hire people based on anything but merit. The minorities that are actually skilled and qualified get judgement and evaluated differently (even by libs) because there is a possibility their skin color got them the job

No one think lebron James was a diversity hire, because it's a merit based system.
