One of the few things they got right and still do in some parts of the Middle East I really wish they would incorporate this back into some sort of punishment for convicted thieves in the US. It seems that theft has been much much more rampant lately and we need a new deterrent. First offense, lose a finger. Second offense, lose a hand. Third offense....you don't want to know.

Then they go on disability and the taxpayer gets to spoon feed them for the rest of their life. No thank you. Just lock them up and throw away the key...

I think second offense should be put them on a bus to San Fran, Portland, LA, or Seattle, they choose.

I'd rather force them to do hard labor and the money they generate goes to whomever they stole from. For child molesters though I am all for cutting off their business.

It is more expensive to imprison the then it is to just feed them rice the rest of their lives.

The burden of proof becomes so ridiculously high that all petty theft cases take much longer to convict and significantly more expensive. That's what I would guess would happen.

It's easy in the Middle East, because if they chop the hands off of innocents, that's the price of living my royal decree.

I would not cut their hand off. I'd tie them to a pole with nothing but their shorts on, in the middle of the city and have canes so people could flog them in public. I'd leave them exposed to the elements.

Nobody is advocating cutting the hands off all the criminals.

Once you do it the first few weeks, there will be a precipitous drop in criminals. All of a sudden, an honest hard working living with two hands sounds a lot better than an easy score with one hand.

And lest we forget, this is an extreme punishment in the ME...

If you have ever lived or worked in Saudi, there are many restaurants where "serve yourself buffets" allowed individuals to scoop rice out of the bin - with their hand. Their right hand, specifically. The left hand, the "sinister" hand, was never used...

Why? Because the "sinister" hand was used to "cleanse oneself". And you don't ever -ever- scoop rice from the bin with your left hand. Got it?

Okay, so the punishment for theft was cutting off your....wait for it...

Your RIGHT hand, so you can never -ever- eat with other people again. 'Cause, well, you can't use a right hand that don't exist.

You are doomed to a life of solitude, never to eat a meal with others, even your own family.

Symbolic, yes, but not just a punishment...a curse, as well.

I prefer the consequences that Singapore has for vandalism.

Do that for all "non violent" crimes.

Yesterday, in Houston, I watched a thug with wave cap roll up to CVS self checkout, put med packets in bag and walk out the door. The CVS worker yelled at him "sir you need to pay!". He kept walking and got into his Mercedes and drove off like he has done it 1000 times. The CVS attendant said she wasn't allowed to chase after per policy. An older black woman customer said in disgust- "damn, that's why they don't trust us!".

That's America I'm a nutshell.

I think Catalytic Converter Thieves should have a hand cut off with their very own Sawzall that they used to cut off Catalytic Converters with. Just sayin.

Cut off a finger for each offense. They can still feed themselves that way, up to 8 offenses.

I could definitely go for that. Hopefully they'd learn after one, but I'm betting after two they'd quit for sure.
