Mid-20th century German historian Oswald Spengler wrote a famous book about cyclical history called the Decline of the West. In the book Spengler noted the cyclical rise and fall of civilizations, how they all rise and fall along the same time period, and how their rises and falls all share the same reasons. Spengler predicts that during the period of decline, there will be centuries of chaos, and then around 2 centuries of Caesarism, which we're clearly seeing. Get comfy, ladies and gentleman, because we're witnessing the Decline of the West with our own eyes.

Sir Edward Gibbon's 5 reasons for the fall of the Roman Empire

1. The undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of human society.
2. Higher and higher taxes; the spending of public money for free bread and circuses for the populace
3. The mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming every year more exciting, more brutal, more immoral.
4. The building of great armaments when the great enemy was within; the decay of individual responsibility.
5. The decay of religion, fading into a mere form, losing touch with life, losing power to guide the people.
