Interesting frame of reference for a "realistic" (her words) time to expect opening back up.

Skip to 2:22 in the link to hear the county health director's conference call audio.

https://kfiam640.iheart.com/content/2020-09-09-dr-ferrer-schools-wont-open-until-after-election/

So interesting that this is what people in places like LA want, time and time again....

Dem stronghold, so no impact to elections.

Bingo. Stronghold in just about every county and city in the state. Says a ton of their current status/condition.

Democrats - There's nothing at all political about our closure decisions. We're not trying to keep down the economy.

What a load of BS.

The sorry liars aren't even trying very hard to hide their motives, even when it hurts their own constituents.

She said the quiet part out loud, oops.

I'm beginning to think that ruining the future of school children in the public system is an actual goal of the California political class rather than just a tolerated byproduct. .

Im on a school board and married to a Principal. The number of times Trump or the election have been discussed in mine or my wifes discussions for the school year is 0. FWIW.

Is your district open for in person instruction and if not, why?

They sure do like to be controlled in that city.

It is not. The neighborhoods in LA we service have the highest transmission rates in the county with multi-generational housing being the norm for our student population. Hybrid model following CDC guidelines would result in 9 student max occupancy (out of 25-28 normal occupancy) and a ****load of additional operating cost and complexity. We wont reopen until cases fall further or a vaccine is available.

What criteria has been developed to determine when face to face instruction will resume?

We look to the state and county for when we reach Phase 3 or 4 transmission rates.

I dont envy you or your wife Malibu. That's tough. I hope for the best for your school staff and those kids you serve.

For the rest of you. Lay off Malibu on this. He's part of a Charter School specifically serving a tough population to serve. And I'm sure they are doing a far better job of it than LA public schools.

Charter school operators and creators would like nothing more than to teach these kids. They dont have nearly the same access to resources as publics. Especially when it comes to operational costs surrounding buildings. So the burdens of opening up their doors are on their donors not tax payers. And like most nonprofits, donated revenue is probably a bit shaky right now.

Is that about right Malibu? I hope I'm remembering this right in terms of you and your wife being involved in charters.

100% correct. The state government (as opposed to the voters) is also very anti-charter. My wife and I both work for founding schools that are still growing or just finished growing. The state froze payment per pupil at March 2020 pupil count. Meaning if you grew by 1 grade level (roughly 100 kids) you dont get paid for that growth, but you sure as heck have the operating expenses.

Last year was the fist year my wifes school had published state test results. Her population is mostly low-income ESL. They outperformed all but 1 Beverly Hills school, and all Thousand Oaks, Agoura, and Calabasas schools. My wife is a BAMF when it comes to running a school.

Best of luck in that environment.

Other political dynamics notwithstanding, I can't understand why the voters and state government don't get alignment on an issue like this.

In an area that is 80-20 dem to republican, the last school board election all the pro charter board members won. The ads were all 100% "Betsy Devos, Trump and billionaires trying to buy and take over our schools." Charters still won. That means the voters strongly prefer charters.

However, unions still have pockets and butter a lot of bread in Sacramento. They also GOTV in elections that most people cant name their representative. So while the voters like charters, the Assembly and Senate do not. And school choice is not a broad enough single issue that will move the needle in the state elections. Thats the unfortunate environment.

Not surprised on results. Keep up the good work.

You guys are brave for fighting that good fight in CA. But I know the families impacted by your work are worth the fight. They need the school choice. It will literally save some of their lives.

I talked to the president of the private school my kids go to recently. School administrators are in a tough spot. You have a healthy number of parents that are pissed about the school not being open, and another healthy number of parents crying about covid.

But, the real problem at our school is that teachers are the ones pressuring the school to stay closed. Some but not all, refuse to teach in classrooms. There is very little chance to find replacements for these teachers if they were to be let go. The administration is trying to walk a fine line that will result int he fewest number of people getting pissed. When you are dependent entirely on tuition income, these are some difficult calls to make.

That's because liberals have to keep the populace in check/dependent on them. Heaven forbid people get a choice and actually succeed.

Have you seen any evidence that children can transmit COVID to adults? My understanding is that there is not a single documented case of that occurring anywhere in the world which is why most of Europe has opened their schools.
