I hate to ruin a good hate on Joe West party, but apparently Rizzo shouted "you're f-cking brutal" to Hunter Wendelstedt, the plate umpire, at which time Wendelstedt ordered him removed. Assuming that is the case, those are magic words and would get anyone ejected from any game. The mask thing was a silly add-on, but Rizzo deserved to get tossed.
I'm hardly a West fan either (or MLB for that matter) but as a long time sports official, if he's in the stands or beyond, I'm of the opinion he needs to let this go UNLESS MLB has told them not to tolerate it (if team personnel). Its very possible they have.
This is what people don't get -- umpires don't have press agents and often aren't asked about these types of things. Its just assumed that they screwed up since everyone hates them and everyone knows of an instance where they obviously missed things. This is the same everyone that is an expert on everything, especially rules wise, in spite of never having seen, much less read, a rule book -- and not even knowing what the rules MLB goes by are called (its not MLB rules). But I digress.
My rule: in the stands or outside the confines of the field, they can say what they want. Just can't interfere -- that gets them a visit from the police and an escort out. If they're part of the school, I probably will report, but I believe in the first amendment. I also have FA rights too and I've learned that most people realize people that yell and scream eventually look like fools anyway. So I don't bother.
