Aggieclass2004 -surely one of the stupidist conclusions made on this board. Too bad about your mother or sister. By the way, Quote the King James Version of the scripture that you think declares this.

One would think, but with new translations coming out all the time, who knows?

Good on too.

When he broke open the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Rev. 8:1

I want to know the Morman take why the King James version is superior to any other Bible translation.

Do you not think that at one time the KJV was a 'new' translation?

Isn't it somewhat funny that Joseph Smith wrote the BoM in King James English rather than in the current style of English? Maybe the "seer stones" he used to translate were earlier model stones that still used "thee", "thou", "shalt", "thy", etc...

Mormons use the King James version because it is accurate enough to prove our point. The LDS church is in the process of a retranslation from the original Greek. I'm not sure what is coming of it, Will there be an official LDS Bible or will we continure to use the KJB. There are a few instances where the KJB has a bad translation so it will be interesting to see what happens.

And before anyone gets started, this isn't about changing the Bible, this is about getting a more correct translation.

Actually Joseph Smith didn't write it in King James English. Where the Book of Mormon quotes the Bible as in the prophecies of Isiah. The Church simply used the exact wording in the King James Bible as if it were an exact quote. The places where this happens in the BOM there will be header notes saying See Isiah chap ____. The Prophets who make the quotes generally are doing so to expound on them.

Only people who have read the first few pages of the BOM think it was written in King James English.

Hank,

You are right. I should have clarified and said the BoM was written in a "poor attempt" at King James English. The language is actually very inconsistent, even within individual books. I could quote from every book, but here are just a few.

From Enos:
quote:
BEHOLD, it came to pass that I, Enos•, knowing my father that bhe• was a just man—for he taught• me in his language, and also in the nurture• and admonition of the Lord—and blessed be the name of my God for it—

quote:
And the Lord said unto me: Thy fathers have also required of me this thing; and it shall be done unto them according to their faith; for their faith was like unto thine.

From Jarom:
quote:
but I shall not write the things of my prophesying, nor of my revelations. For what could I write more than my fathers have written? For have not they revealed the plan of salvation? I say unto you, Yea; and this sufficeth me.

quote:
And thus being prepared to meet the Lamanites, they did not prosper against us. But the word of the Lord was verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: aInasmuch• as ye will keep my commandments ye shall bprosper• in the land.

From the Book of Omni:
quote:
Wherefore, in my days, I would that ye should know that I fought much with the sword to preserve my people, the Nephites

quote:
yea, he would not suffer that the words should not be verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: aInasmuch• as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall not bprosper• in the land

Or from Mosiah:
quote:
And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us

I have read a few books and sermons from that time period in US History, and I don't recall anyone speaking with all of the "Ye"s and "Thou"s and "Thine"s, etc...

I also think it's funny how many times the phrase "and it came to pass" is used. I think this was Joseph's favorite phrase. The following is a list of how many times it is used in certain books. What these books have in common is that they are all only one chapter (and the chapters are not that long):

Enos - 6 times
Jarom - 4 times
Omni - 13 times (in 30 verses)
Words of Mormon - 6 times
Fourth Nephi - 20 TIMES (in only 49 verses)

Again, each of these instances are in one chapter. Basically, a lot of things came to pass.

If you get to "heaven" and there are no women, you probably really went to the other place.

"If you get to "heaven" and there are no women, you probably really went to the other place."

I don't know Buck. The older I get the more I see the advantages. Do you think I can catch a nice fish every time I throw in a line up there while sipping a little Cabernet? No one to tell me to be home at such and such a time to go to some social "function".
