Why is this a big deal. It seems like making a mountain out of a mole hill.

If a fiction book and movie will change someone's belief in Christ, then their belief wasn't all that strong anyway.

I think that is part of the problem. People that do not know much about the love of Christ will see this book as fact and that the church is responsible for this HUGE cover up. Therefor casting doubts about the valitidity of Christ and His love for us.

It just muddies the water for those that do not believe, imo.

blue,

have you read this work of fiction?

i read it. the book is retarded. anyone with a little bit of historical background about christianity will know the book is full of crap. then again, a lot of people know nothing about the history of christianity.

Nah... It doesn't interest me. Mystical stuff really doesn't wet my whistle per-se.

It is fiction, and I don't really believe everything that I read or watch.

what was wrong with 'The Passion'? there was 10x the uproar...from people predicting global anti-semitic backlash, to labeling the director as an anti-semite, to playing the 'too violent' card (even by Hollywood's "Natural Born Killers" standards)...people were even trying to actually ban the movie. in this case a group of religious people are encouraging a boycott and people who havent even read the book are up in arms and chastising everyone for being close-minded. i will not be seeing it b/c i think its a stupid idea and tom hank's hair-do is rediculous.

I have found that just about everyone screaming "It is fiction" has not even read the book.

Shall I give book reviews on books I have not read?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
it's not really a big deal, but there will be plenty of people who think the book is historically accurate, and will attack my faith because of it.

that's fine with me. I'll be ready, but many christians will not.

Bingo. This is due in no small part to the author claiming it is a historical novel, not unlike The Killer Angels, and that he spent a ton of time researching for it. Never mind that he couldn’t even get the decade that the dead sea scrolls were recovered correct…

It is a completely fictional novel that holds itself out as less than completely fictional.

Well RottenTomatoes.com has it as a 6% right now which is amazingly horrible.

completely agree with the original poster...

anyone who pics a novel out of the "fiction" section and takes it for truth isn't of sound mind.

its fiction people.

I thought the book was pretty cheesy, but it was thoroughly entertaining. The reviews say the movie is very boring which would be hard to do given the source material. I guess Ron Howard is back to his old self. A Beautiful Mind is the only impactful, interesting film he has made in my opinion, and pretty much all of his other stuff is very run of the mill, flat, whitebread cinema.

I read the book, and laughed out loud at several of the "revelations" in it. The same for his other book, Angels and Demons. Dan Brown is a secular humanist twit with an agenda.

The big deal is because there are a whole lot of people out there who believe that it is fiction based on fact. They don't understand that his first page titled "FACT:" is in reality fiction also. Except for the fact that there is an Opus Dei society, most everything else on the page is fiction like the rest of the book. There are a whole lot of people looking for excuses to point fingers at Christianity. That I think is a fault with the Christian Church and maybe our culture, but I've had to list the facts that weren't facts for a number of people, because they just really believed it or really wanted to.

If people are stupid enough to think that this book is real why are you worried about them?

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ive read the book twice. ITS FICTION.

The movie was very underwhelming and noticibly different from the book.
The Lone Stranger
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, it is a work of ficton, and yes, if it shakes your faith, then you don't know much.

What bothers me is the intro. that talks about such "facts" than are everything but. I think most intelligent high school 10th graders could do better research.

My other consern is that the church is generating more income for this book and film by treating it like it is such a serious threat to the church. I remember The Exorcist film and all the uproar about it. I think that the church helped develop a "wet paint" aspect to the film. Many people who didn't care and would not have ever seen the film, went to see what all the noise was about.

My fear is that the church, in it's paranoia, is selling both the book and the film.

I have never read the book and have no problem saying it is fiction. I have also never read Lord of the Rings, but can say it is fiction.

I was simply making a parody of all those who say that whoever believes Dan Brown's "theory" are not smart people when in fact, many smart people have bought into this "theory."

As of right now, the Church is in crisis. Mass attendance is at an all time low, pedophilia scandal stigma abounds, vocations (becoming a priest or nun) is at an all time low and there is an internal war over the future direction of the Church's politics (liberal/conservative)

Obviously in times like this, the last thing they want is something that challenges peoples already shaken faith in the Catholic Church as an institution.

I am Catholic and did enjoy the book as a (largely) work of fiction but I was glad that it does call attention to the fact that our sisters in the Catholic Church where and continue to be treated as second class citizens. Wether ther was a cover up or smear campaign to cast women as unworthy, its high time the issue was addressed.

Homsar
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The church will always be in scandal as long as it is seen as an organization rather than a body of believers.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's funny that you say the Church treats women as second class citizens when they've given Mary the highest honor of any HUMAN that has ever walked the earth. She is also the first disciple.
OSAg01
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The first disciple? That's a new term for her that I had not heard. I am learning a lot today.
