"...gather 'round the table of the Lord
eat his body, drink his blood,
and we'll sing the song of love..."

Favorite old Catholic songs???

"We are one in the Spirit,
we are one in the Lord,
we are one in the Spirit,
we are one in the Lord...
And they'll know we are Christians
by our love, by our love
yes, they'll know we are Christians by our love..."

Man they just remind me of dealing communion as a 12 year old Altar Boy!

Let our light shine before men
that they may see the good that we do
and give glory to God"

"Old" Catholic songs? I'm happy to attend a church that sings the real "old" Catholic songs. I've never heard a song at my church that was written in the 20th century. Most of what we sing came either from the 1500-1700s or from way back, 4th & 5th century stuff.

"Glory to God in the highest, sing glory to God..."

"Sing a new song unto the Lord let your song be sung from mountains high"

"And He will raise you up on eagle's wings"

"Be not afraid, I go before you always, come follow me and I will give you rest"

just to name a few that are sung every Sunday at my church.

Southlake,

I don't think "We are One in the Spirit" is a Catholic song. I've been singing that song in the Baptist churches all of my life. I think it must be a "non-denominational" song.

"They'll Know We Are Christians" was written in 1966, therefore not old. I'd suspect that Mr Scholtes (the author of both the words and the music) would be pretty surprised to find out he's Roman Catholic, too!

None of the songs listed on this thread are "old". I don't think any of them are even pre Vatican II.

Popular Catholic songs:

"A Mighty Fortress is Our God" Words and music by Martin Luther in about 1529.

"O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" Words by Charles Wesley in about 1739.

I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE

1.I am the bread of life
He who comes to me shall not hunger
He who believes in me shall not thirst
No one can come to me, unless the Father draw him

Ref: And I will raise Him up (3x) on the last day

2.The bread that I will give
is my flesh for the life of the world
and he who eats of this bread
he shall live forever (2x) (Refrain)

3.Unless you eat of the flesh of the son of Man
and drink of his blood (2x)
you shall not have life within you (Refrain)

3.I am the resurrection, I am the life
he who believes in me even if he die
he shall live forever (Refrain)

5.Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ
The Son of God who has come into the world (Refrain)

Both of these hymns are in the Lutheran hymnal as well. I love the communion hyms:

"Soul Adorn Thyself with Gladness"

"I Come O Savior to Thy Table"

and also, "Just as I Am".

Micah: precisely ... good music knows no denominational bounds. That's why I mentioned the authors / composers of two quite familiar and widely known hymns. Luther's name is given as an identifier for your denomination, Wesley is familiar within Methodism. Yet the words are timeless and boundaryless.

I dont mean to sleight or omit any religions here. I was simply raised in a Catholic church and these are the songs I heard over and over again. Glad to hear others enjoyed them too. Our folk bands actually took these songs and made them better - IMHO!

I'm a tad doubtful that "A Mighty Fortress" made it into the Catholic hymnal.

Southlake an altar boy? No way!

Faith of our fathers, living still,
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword;
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whenever we hear that glorious Word!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free:
How sweet would be their children's fate.
If they, like them, could die for thee!
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto Thee;
And through the truth that comes from God,
Mankind shall then be truly free.
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife;
And preach Thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers, holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death.

Genitori, Genitoque
Laus et iubilatio,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedictio:
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudatio.

JayAggie,

What church do you go to?

My church (Catholic) is always hopping around the hymnal singing some awful song that nobody knows. If only I could hear ...

Be Not Afraid
On Eagle's Wings
Hail Mary, Gentle Woman
You Satisfy the Hungry Heart
I am the Bread of Life

... to name a few.

Of course they made me happy the other day when we sang "Prayer of St. Francis."

Liturgical ministers determine what songs will be sung during Mass, according to the scriptures being read that day.

So, what's the difference between a liturgical minister and a terrorist?

You can reason with a terrorist...

Word of God our flesh that fashioned With the fire of life impassioned.
Striving still to Truth unknown, Soaring, dying, 'round thy throne.

Really?

I haven't heard any of the Roman Catholics on this board confirm or deny this.

If true (texasag73?), why?

Is there that much official animosity toward Martin Luther in the Roman church still? In the words of the hymn, I see nothing that would conflict with the teachings of ANY Christian church.

SWOSU - I have never heard " A Mighty Fortress is our God" sung in any Catholic Church that I have been to.

Why? Guess Luther's pronouncements about the Pope may have something to do with it. He also broke his solemn vow of obedience to his Augustinian Order. He also threw out 7 books of the Bible, and added the word "alone" after the word "faith" in Romans to change the meaning of the verse.
SWOSU

So the entire Roman Catholic church refuses to use a hymn of powerful lyrics and beautiful melody because of the author? Wow. That's sad.

Yeah, the Catholic church is never petty.
