I always viewed this as vanity. It used to be a small percentage of women getting their chest enlarged for attention. But now, it seems like half the women I come across have gotten something done...lips, cheeks, butt implants. I can immediately tell something is off. Some look straight up like clowns. Young people too, not just women in their 40s trying to turn back the clock after seeing the latest celebrity do it.

Other than I am completely turned off by this, does the church have a stance on this? I think it's vanity and should be discouraged. But from the pulpit?

I always wonder what is missing in their lives that they feel they need to do plastic surgery. I personally do not believe this should be addressed from the pulpit. Preach the Gospel and let the Holy Spirit change their hearts so that they know God created and loves them no matter what. When they realize that, they will love themselves. No need for plastic surgery.
We never browbeat our kids over tattoos, piercings, alcohol, etc. And our two daughters only have ear piercings, no tattoos, no addictions, and no out of wedlock kids. In my opinion, if you tell people something is a sin in the church's eye, it makes them want to do it more.

Always an interesting discussion to see what people think is acceptable and what isn't. Your list seems to focus on women's procedures, but there are loads of men who have had something done in regards to their looks. So do we condemn hair transplant surgeries with the same fervor as breast implants? Where is the line drawn?

I'm not viewing this through a religious lens so my point of view is going to be different from yours, but as long as a cosmetic procedure is safe I see little reason to ban it. Let people decide for themselves.

Something may be missing for some of them, but not necessarily all women. Some are happily married with kids. It's just straight up vanity.

I think it would be the modern example of 1 Pet. 3:3-4

3 Do not let your adorning be externalthe braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious.

That was the outworking of the gospel for women in Peter's eyes.

The Church's stance on cosmetic surgery is dependent upon intent. If someone was in a disfiguring accident, had to have their breast removed to defeat cancer, born with a cleft palette, etc. then surgery can be seen as restorative. They are in line with what a person should naturally have, if not for the unfortunate effects the fall had on nature.

Surgery because you want to look more attractive lends itself towards vanity, and it is often a never ending search for the next thing that makes a person feel attractive. That has levels as well, but it should generally be avoided. So what if you bald a little early? If your boobs aren't as big as another woman's? If you have age wrinkles? Age gracefully as you can, and be thankful for the body God gave you.

The question is where do we draw the line? Is rogaine a problem, or just hair plugs? Are wrinkle creams a problem, or just botox? Boob jobs are bad, but what about push up bras that make it look like you had one? This would make a general sermon difficult. I think pointing people back to modesty and humility would likely work better than a "don't do these certain things". Hopefully if one embraces modesty and humility they will come to the logical conclusion that these types of procedures are dumb and potentially spiritually harmful.

Whitening toothpaste, painted nails, jewelry, spray tan, expensive clothes and shoes, hair coloring / gray cover up, plucking eyebrows, acne treatments, fancy house or car . . . there are so many everyday examples of 'minor' vanity acts that we are all probably guilty of. I feel like a very black and white view of vanity results in an impossible standard to try to meet. When I find myself shaking my head at someone with what I feel is an absurd level of cosmetic surgery, I think about the many minor acts that I'm guilty of wonder to what extent I'm being hypocritical. On this topic, I suspect that we all live in a glass house - maybe some people's houses have a little more or less glass than others.

Along the lines of what Banned said, I think intent is important. And I think understanding what is mentally (or spiritually) harmful is important.

I tend to find that the people who get wrapped up about what other people do tend do so out of envy or malice.

I've yet to really meet anybody that can judge other people from an entirely pure heart.

I think this is doubly true when it comes to men judging the vanity or appearances of women as anger, loathing, and lust tend to play large roles. I think there is a creepy element to it. The fact that looking at probably married women and judging them either turning you on or "turns you off."

Gross…

In a further creepy way, I noticed that you focused on "butt lips and tits" basically. Again, I think there's a pretty nasty creepy thing going on here but you realize a lot of augmentation that women go through is to maintain a fresher and healthier appearance.

In today's corporate world, stress, etc. affects the appearance of women significantly different than it does men. Quite often it is done to give them a fresher appearance so as to better compete in a higher end corporate environment.

My guess based on the body parts that you're focusing on is that you've never been involved in that world and that you're being gross and judgmental out of ignorance

I guess I would ask why is there such a concern for you that it was really important to have a religion and philosophy discussion about it?

How do you believe this is affecting your spirituality or theirs? As a man who is not married to these women, why do you feel it necessary or correct to judge them?

Most women come out of this looking far more attractive by societal standards. Does this cause you conflict personally?

I ask because I know men who genuinely hate women and genuinely hate attractive women as they have not been successful with the opposite sex, etc…

Have you managed to avoid all forms of vanity in your life?

Men who buy nice clothes, cut their hair, purchase a nice vehicle, or work out are essentially engaging in the same type of vanity no?

Does this get you worked up as well or is it only the women that are upsetting you?

Yeah, I think there is a difference.

I'm contending that the OP is being hateful, envious and probably coming at this with some level of perversion based on his own focus.

Furthermore, condeming bad behavior, in the defense as others, is not the same thing as passing judgment.

MQB decided to pass judgment upon an entire group of individuals, making plastic surgery, solely and emphasis of vanity and "lips, butts and tits" and then talking about how these probably married women "turn him off" as if he should be worried about that at all.

My response was harsh and directly to the point. No need to dance around the topic when MQB chose to attack an entire group of people that he does not know their motivation or them personally and to make it overtly sexual.

The answer to his question was a quick Google search away.

He chose to engage it out of what was seemingly his own hateful, self promoting and potentially perverse need to have the conversation.

I would also like to propose a question to the OP that does focus potentially on what he wants to focus on.

Let's assume this scenario exist:

A woman goes and gets plastic surgery, including potentially butt, lips, and tits, out of vanity for sure, but mostly out entirely in order to feel attractive to her husband and please him.

A man goes to the gym, works on those biceps, triceps and chest. Tries to keep a nice lean physique. Undoubtably for health and vanity, but is mostly concerned with pleasing his wife.

As a Bible, thumping, protestant solo scriptura kind of guy I'm sure you can reference the scripture regarding appropriate attractiveness with a marriage.

It's possible that it doesn't matter if it "turns you off" or turns you on.

There's a very good chance (almost certainly) it wasn't for you and your sin of looking upon it and judging is far worse than the sliver of externally motivated vanity that may exist within that marriage.

I would be genuinely interested in knowing your position and where your authority derives to be the arbiter of judgment and virtue on someone else's marriage.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

Would you say there is a difference in the man who goes to the gym to get in shape and the man who takes a GLP-1? Or the man who works out and reaches his natural potential vs the man using PEDs to look like Thor?

Incomplete formula. Motivations matter.

I take both and I'm a generally pretty fit 6' 2" 190lb

My wife is a very successful smoke show.

I care very much about how she perceives me and whether or not I'll please her. Luckily for me, she doesn't want me to look like Thor or I would do my best to achieve that.

She does the exact same thing for me.

All of the things you reference are just tools.

That's like asking if there's a difference between a man who owns a baseball bat and a gun.

It's a silly proposition to ask until you know the intent.

I absolutely took my own advice. MQB has been on this board a long time and I feel like I have a pretty decent understanding of him specifically.

The good the bad, and the indifferent that we all possess. Including myself.

Luckily, I also possess a basic baseline, psychological understanding of people and men.

That basic understanding along with his exact terminology gave me with a very high degree of certainty that I was not wrong and could proceed forward.

Our words and obvious implied intentions do matter, and we don't get to just hide behind the veil of "you don't know me, dude". I don't have to know you to see what it is that you're doing.

If somebody judged me and said "you know what dude sometimes you're a little harsh, you can be a little pr1ckly"
(Not bypassing filters as the word is not vulgar or the target of the filter)

He's not wrong and he's not judging me. He's just basing a statement based off the interaction that is before him.

You're doing it right now.

I'm not offended by that and acknowledge I am imperfect.

Then maybe we've gotten to the root of your judgement of OP.

If you think there is no difference between a man using PEDs to enhance his look, and a man who naturally gets his body to the optimal state that God created him to reach, then that is a wide disagreement between the two of us that won't be bridged with an online back and forth
