Excellent listen…and I think the connections to the Essenes and the Dead Sea Scrolls is compelling. Very interesting connections to the Essenes and the Last Supper & Eucharist!

There are some interesting connections between John the Baptist and the Essenes as well, and some believe he was influenced or a member of the Essenes community.
Apparently if/when a member left the Essene community (or when outside their community) they vowed to live only off the land eating only locusts and honey and such.

Thanks for posting this talk. Makes me want to revisit the Essenes more!

From a purely historical perspective, this sounds interesting.

Who are the Essenes and what is John's connection.

John is my chosen Saint name so it is an area of interest.

The Essenes were a celibate community living in the desert, at Qumran. They thought the temple was defiled, so they didn't worship there. The Dead Sea Scrolls explain their community rules, as well as having all of the OT texts. It is thought that John the Baptist was one of them.

Some context on the Essenes/Pharisee's. They both thought that through strict adherence to the Torah, Israel's messiah would come about and that God was waiting for adherence before coming. Essenes withdrew to the desert and became almost monastic like to accomplish this goal. The pharisees were very big on driving conformance among the common people (because they wanted the Messiah). This was a point of contention between these two groups.

Essenes were very big on the Enochic calendar and we have found more copies of Enoch than Genesis from them. And both were the two most copied texts they have found in dead sea scrolls.

The Essenes also have The Melchizedek Scroll which is a really cool glimpse into one of the ideas about who the messiah would be. Its from a 100B.C. Post Christ, the pharisees (the main ancestors of rabbinic jews) ceased copying it because it is dripping with Jesus fulfillment language that just hits you upside the head with duh thats Jesus Christ.
