Is there some reason St. Ignatius would be otherwise? Had a pretty good Jesuit as a Pope recently.

Read the article. Have to agree with the Master General that the devil is "not human". Angels are spirits. He seems to have a better grasp of those "forces" than Mr. Martin.

You've brought this point up in a few threads lately. Is there anyone who is actually claiming the devil is fully human? Or that the devil lacks the capability of presenting as a human?

Its pretty obvious that there are orders of angels and demons that can appear as fully human and interact with humans in the flesh. Who visited Lot then? The catholic church preserves that the demons even appeared as Christ to at least one of the catholic saints and he immediately recognized it as a demon because the fake Jesus didn't have any scars if I'm not mistaken.

The archangel Raphael appeared to Tobit and Tobias as a man, in the book of Tobit (Catholic Bible only), in what St. Paul describes as "angels unaware..."

This is what that Master General (forgot his name) of the Jesuits was talking about. Getting caught up in what the devil looks like, whether he has a chicken foot or a goat hoof- is exactly what the devil wants us doing. Instead we should understand that evil (he didn't deny that there is evil) is a force in this world that can take on many forms. Like I said, this Master General has a better grasp of evil than Mr. Martin.

ETA: here is the entire quote of Arturo Sosa, SJ Master General :

" In different ways. We need to understand the cultural elements to refer to this figure. In the language of Saint Ignatius it is the bad spirit that leads you to do things that go against the spirit of God. It exists as the evil personified in different structures but not in people, because it is not a person, it is a way of actuating evil. He is not a person like a human person. It is a way for evil to be present in human life. Good and evil are in a permanent struggle in human consciousness [conscience], and we have ways to show them. We recognize God as good, entirely good. Symbols are part of reality, and the devil exists as a symbolic reality, not as a personal reality."

You could easily make the same claim, 'where does the angels get this power?' And the answer is the same. God. There is clearly an order of Angels and now demons who can take on flesh. At least appear to.

I think we are in agreement that God is the source of this power - not any angel (fallen or un-fallen).

The issue from my reading was that Sosa was being called a heretic for saying the devil is not a person. Newsflash- the devil is not a person. Carry on.
