Deut 4:24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

The author writes that your God is a consuming fire. The author did not say that our God is a consuming fire. Did the author have a higher level of understanding of God than Israel?

Pretty sure that's a simple one. Author is Jewish. He is speaking to Jewish audience. It's a literary device meant to put the onus on the listener or reader. The author is condemning his audience to snap them out of their complacency.

"This message is for YOU!! I'm talking to you Jack. YOUR GOD demands blah blah blah!!!" Type thing.

That is a nice opinion. But the text itself also says that Deut 4:4 "But you who have held fast to the YHWH your God are all alive today".. Later the author commands Deut 13:4 "You are to follow the YHWH your father and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, serve him, and cleave unto him" I don't think God is simply demanding that we cleave to a fire. That is impossible to do and live.

The angels of heaven are made of fire (PS 104:4) , and YHWH himself can devour them. If you look at a fire you will see there are at least two parts .There is a blue or black part at the bottom near the fuel and there is a white or orange light above. The white or orange light ascends, resting on the blue or black flame as a throne. The blue or black light acts as a throne of glory for the white or blue. The blue or black light consumes anything below it. The white or orange light does not consume anything below it. We being in the realm of humans are below God. God being a fire, must be made of different aspects, the blue part consuming us, what is below. The white or orange light does not consume us who are below.

In the context of salvation and serving the Lord....what is the importance of the distinction you propose?

Do you mean the first death or the second death? The matter is one of life and death and of taking possession of land [inheritance]. See Deuteronomy 4:1. The commandment was not written to be ignored.

Tip 1. Read the verses before 24
Tip 2. Read the verses after 24.

Interpretive tips as to what consuming fire means.

21 "Now the Lord was angry with me on your account, and swore that I would not cross the Jordan, and that I would not enter the good land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. 22 For I will die in this land, I shall not cross the Jordan, but you shall cross and take possession of this good land. 23 So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the Lord your God which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the Lord your God has commanded you. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

25 "When you become the father of children and children's children and have remained long in the land, and act corruptly, and make an idol in the form of anything, and do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord your God so as to provoke Him to anger, 26 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will surely perish quickly from the land where you are going over the Jordan to possess it. You shall not live long on it, but will be utterly destroyed. 27 The Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the Lord drives you.

God is Jealous and his judgement will be a like a consuming fire.
