Halloween seems like a good time to reflect on what we fear.

What are you scared of? Lets talk about our spiritual or personal or even irrational fears. There's doom and gloom on Politics Forum every second, so ideally political fears take a backseat here.

Time.

It moves faster every year.

I've said it before, but this song hits so differently now.

Rational fear? Death. Not because I'm afraid of it personally (though I'd like to meet it about 4-5 decades from now), but because I fear for my kids in a world without me. Once I've raised them to adulthood, I'll be at peace with most things, but until then...they need me here.

Irrational? Skyscrappers. Sorry Aggrad08. Things that are taller than they are wide are unnatural.

Also one of my children falling away from the faith. Even more if it's my fault.

Spiders
Something happening to my wife or kids
Landing in an airplane..would much rather parachute out

Dying in a state of mortal sin... and the same for my wife and kids.

That I'm screwing up my kids and not even knowing it.

my two greatest fears are this

• That everything I believe in my faith is a fairy-tale, that there is nothing beyond the physical seen world, and so I will have spent my whole life devoted to a fable, and almost worse, I won't ever even know I'm wrong. (this is my existential dread)
• That one day while I'm at work my wife will decide she has had enough of my hoarding and will clean out the garage. And that will be the day I finally find a use for that old vacuum cleaner motor that I saved. (we do currently have an agreement that so long as she can get her car in the garage she will leave it all alone)

That I'll take home another one of those bat viruses I've been tinkering with at work and everyone will get all pissed off again.

But seriously, exposure to things like prions and dimethylmercury without noticing. Also, dementia.

Tightly enclosed spaces bother me. Have you ever seen those videos of cave divers pulling themselves through tiny cracks deep in the earth? That sounds like pure torture to me.

I have a 9 month old (oh hey the wife had a baby!). I'm afraid of everything now.

i thought about that for my answer but i decided i'm not afraid of it.


i'm not afraid because the only way someone could ever get me into one of those spaces would be to first kill me and then drag my dead body into them.

shallow answer is being stuck in an elevator.

deeper is that I am afraid of never feeling like I accomplished my goals, career wise or never found the marriage that I've prayed for. Only time will tell on either.

From my reading of your post, your fears are unfounded my friend.

And I have suffered tremendously from scrupulosity, where I constantly doubted my salvation. Almost drove me crazy.

Finally got to the point where I realized I just had to totally trust and rely on the Lord. And then came peace and joy.

Baby 1… omg baby has a sniffle, runny nose. Go get the overpriced, rebranded saline wipes and baby branded petroleum jelly. Make a dr appointment, clear the calendar, turn on the humidifier, have the house cleaners disinfect the entire home.!!.!.!.!!.!

Baby # 5…. Hey, baby Hs the sniffles… okay use child #1, shirt to wipe it. Send them outside to play in dirt


ETA: baby #8… hey first kid (now teenager) has a runny nose… quick. Have everyone else drink from first kids cup so we can just knock this wave out in one big pass rather than 6 weeks individually

Having seen Alzheimer's up close, this is a massive fear of mine, and it's not helped by my knowledge of the injuries I suffered in the Army.

Only not being able to provide for my family supplants it as a fear.

I have managed to find close company with people that worry about and catastrophize every remotely plausible outcome. This past little while has been a real peach, I tell you. In the midst of a few fairly serious things that require action, I'm deconstructing why every imperfection is not likely to be the first horseman of the apocalypse.

A country losing its ideals and moral center, pushing for more authoritarian laws/mandates. Where people use emotion and fear, instead of logic and unbiased data.

Never mind.

Not really a fear but I have a recurring dream of losing teeth.

They break, fall out and/or I am chewing gum that can't be pulled out of my mouth. It's just stuck there, no matter how much I pull out, there is still more gum.

Very annoying.

I fear I shall have left some task undone the Lord has set for me.
