I wonder what Lazarus experienced when he was actually dead.

Yes, when I had a heat stroke. Definitely left my skin. Looked down at my body. In the non-chalant-est prayer ever I said "hey God, I feel pretty certain you arent taking me today, but if I'm going to die, could you speed it up because this sucks."

Spoiler alert: did not die.

I was cycling, got hot, felt fatigued, so I stopped on a bridge to drink some water, got off my bike felt lightheaded and dizzy. So tried to sit down on the railing. Then felt wonderful, content, never felt anything like it.

Then I heard my wife telling me to wake up, get up, open you eyes. But I didn't want to, where I was felt wonderful. She became adamant telling me to wake up, open your eyes, so I did. She wasn't there, no one was.

I suspect he was in hell.

I don't say that to be a jerk, but imagine what a dick-move it would be for Jesus to take Lazarus out of heaven and bring him back here.

Jesus doesn't make dick-moves, so that's how I figure it.

NDEs deny materialism by the standards of materialism: how many clinically dead patients have described conversations and objects on the roof? A lot. Ask a hospice worker.

Regarding Lazarus, I disagree. According to Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich, he was a righteous man.

That's straight up PacifistAg logic.

No one went to heaven until Jesus opened up the gates by atoning for original sin, no?

There are some pretty deep theological weeds there, and it's worth the time to explore the revelations of the Saints - subjective experiences of objective reality - starting with the Emmerich link. Both she and her scribe (a popular poet who returned to the faith through her example) are trustworthy IMO

Hebrews 9:27 - And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.

I think it's more likely that to Lazarus, it was like being asleep.

I did, it was when I was white water guide, it happened at Skull rapids in West Water canyon. It's too long to go into details here, but God actually spoke to me and told me how to get out of the drowning situation I was in. I heard Him as clear as I can hear anyone. I truly believe that I would have died that day had He not reached out to me.

Got hung up in a trotline at 25ft on the bottom of a river. Complete blackout, low on air, only diver down and the surface was not hearing my comms unit at all. Had one hand on the line we had on the body I was recovering, one hand trying to get things free.

I had pretty well made my peace with death, and was prepared to meet the afterlife I believe in. Calming down and accepting I was likely dead is what probably saved my life btw.

Surface with a calculated 45 seconds of air left. Made a succesful recovery of the remains, and was on detail when we told the mother and the grandfather, a veteran of the Pusan perimeter and Korea, that the young man was recovered.

The hardest part of that day was when we told the older man. He broke down in tears holding my arm, and I spent sometime behind a fire engine by myself after that. The reality of nearly dying didnt set in until much later. I still remember those last few seconds, and feeling the knife handle come out of the sheath that had me pinned.

I no longer dive for bodies, it seems my opinion of not risking divers lives to Hollywood, and my sexuality/gender just weren't acceptable to certain people.

Three times. And I also have expired for 40+ seconds.

Flight paramedic brought me back. Never did get a chance to meet him afterwards. And now I have a new bucket list item.

He sat with Moses in heaven, no?

Also, Elijah?

I think we are embodied spirits.
Our spirits continue when the body expires. I personally believe (Catholic) Mary Ann Winkowski (though she is sympathetic to reincarnation). Her book When Ghosts Speak is worth reading.

Breakdown is:
- Our spirits are a different type of "energy" after death - there is a light that some do not enter immediately (afraid of judgment, want to snoop around, ect). These are ghosts.
- Places can have "residual energy" - such as a Civil War battlefield, a place of huge trauma
- Spirits have "crossed" and those can appear in dreams (so all ghosts are spirits, not all spirits are ghosts)
- Angels and demons exist (preternatural) and can influence / appear

As for NDE, I think we can conclusively say they happen. "Return" is possible. Many testimonies, and just talk to hospital workers!

Considering this spiritual "dimension" - different from our own but related and interact-able, also sheds light on aliens, which could be "inter-dimensional" creations (though viewing them as demons is also reasonable).

When I was younger I was practicing engine failure for my private pilot license. The general way to do this is to pull the power from the engine, find a place you could hypothetically land, descend as though you're actually about to land until you are a few hundred feet above ground, and then put the power back in. I found a grassy field for my practice run that was plenty long to land, and was surrounded by trees. My goal was to pretend as though I was going to land on one end of the field. As I descended I realized I had significantly overshot my goal, and that if I was actually going to touch down I would probably touch down closer to the middle of the field rather than the edge as I had intended. No problem I thought, I would put the power back in and try again. But as I put the power back in, nothing happened. The engine just sputtered. I was at a complete loss for what to do. I was heading for the trees. I positioned the plane such that the wings would take the brunt of the hit, but I thought that was the end of the line for me. As I got nearer to the trees, the engine sputtered back to life, and I was able to ascend fast enough that I missed the trees by what seemed like a few feet. I didn't have any of the experiences normally associated with a near-death scenario, but it did scare me ****less. I only flew once again after that, and never did get my private pilot license.
