For those that don't closely follow New Testament scholarship (which is most of us), Larry Hurtado is probably the world's preeminent scholar on early NT time period veneration of Jesus.

In this review, he gives credit to Ehrman on several points and then calls him to task on others. A little too complex for a meaningful excerpt. Suffice it to say that there is little doubt that belief in Jesus as "God" exploded immediately following the resurrection.

Ehrman responds, bringing a few clarifications from Hurtado:

Ehrman is a bit out of his depth against a real scholar like Dr. Hurtado.

Since Erhman is a skeptic he isn't a "real" scholar? That's a touch petty.

Ehrman not a real scholar.

He's a professor of religious studies at a major tier 1 research university and has written dozens of books, textbooks, and peer-reviewed articles. He's a real scholar, whether you like him or not.

If you're addressing me, Sapper, I was being sarcastic. I'm a big ehrman shill.

Nah, I was addressing the earlier post. Your post actually reminded me why stuff like "real scholar" ticks me off so much and why honest discussions about the early history of Christianity are so hard.

By real scholar I meant top notch opponent. I was not implying Ehrman is not studied. But Ehrman isn't used to facing off with people like Hurtado.

That said, Ehrman also fared pretty poorly against Colbert.

Ehrman gets attention and money only because he's a former believer turned skeptic. He's also one of the most intellectually dishonest people I've ever read or watched.

Rare for an overwrought pontificator, arms flailing about and what not.

Yes, I thought Colbert made Ehrman look pretty silly, or maybe Ehrman did it to himself by trying to tell a few bad jokes. Have you seen the video?

Yes, I've seen it. Ehrman is not a comedian. You think that Colbert, whom I like, using the elephant analogy negates a man that has spent his entire life in textual criticism, heads a religious dept, has written dozens of books and papers and can actually read the original texts in the language they were written?

Colbert is a comedian and satirist and sets his show up that way. Ehrman is about the furthest thing from this. For you to think that video represents someone getting owned 'in a debate' is just foolish.

I said he fared poorly. He did.

That doesn't mean he wasn't more knowledgable than Colbert.

Ehrman does not do quality work.
