Some posters seem to think that when they get the last word or they don't get a response means that they "won".

What say you texaggers?

Actually d4 will probably outlast all of us. Well at least as long as nobody asks him a question he does not want to answer.

I assume it means my last response was considered stupid or boring.

Gee, I wonder what poster and what thread inspired this thread . . .

Hmmm . . . .

Let me think . . . .

And yes, some operate just that way.

Let me try to think of some examples . . . .

In all seriousness, I think when someone has made their point so that I understand why they think/believe the way they do, they have "won" the argument. I still may not agree w/them but I have an understanding of their position that I didn't have before.

You can only really "win" a discussion if it's factual or you convince the other person your opinion is stronger or more valid. However, I'd call it a win-win in that case because the "loser" had shed themselves of either a fallacy or a weaker position (relatively speaking).

However, it appears rather juvenile when someone tries to make a claim, gets called on it, and rather than respond, they just say "I said what I wanted to - bye!"

Easy question, but tough to answer. Truth is found in our revelation of scripture, so, if that is rejected, then even dialogue is somewhat limited.

I can honestly say this: Sometimes, when I think I have won, I have lost. And, other times when I feel defeated, in reflection, I feel pretty good about things.

When it comes to questions about the ultimate nature of things, I try to be more concerned about the truth than I do about scoring debate points.

Honestly, I am not always successful.

In diamondbob's mind, he wins every thread whether he posts on it or not, and whether he answers any questions or not.

One way to win is to take something your learn on here and apply it to your life.

Over the past six months there have been a million threads on gay mariage, abortion, and human rights in general. While I didn't always post on them I read most of them and then read a little about the subject in general. Recently, a friend of mine had a court case involving paternal rights in a gay marriage case. In discussing it with the friend I was able to make some good points to her about the situation. She mentioned my points to her lawyer and and her lawyer thought that they were good enough that she used them in her opening and closing statments and in cross examining the defendent. It may not have had any effect on the judges decision but she did win the case. I was able to help because of things I had learned or at least been introduced to on texags.

Generally speaking, I know I've won an argument once I make a post.

How about a title? Something like Master Debater of Texags or maybe just Your Excellency or Pope of Texags.

I think we should let the "winner" choose their title, that's only fair...

There are several ways to answer the question. First, we all seem to agree that simply declaring yourself the winner, or declaring the other poster to have failed is empty rhetoric. So a few ways to win:

1. Convince other posters of your position (RARELY happens)
2. Convince lurkers of your position (so we can't know who wins)
3. Come to a greater understanding of your position and/or your opponent's position (the feel-good definition, but I like it anyway)
4. Explain your position as to encourage better understanding from your opponents (another feel-good one).

Having said that, /end thread

Discussions here would go far smoother if we all had this sort of approach to the topics we hash over.

Having reflected some more, hopefully, I come here to refine, redefine, influence my beliefs, practices, and attitudes.

When I get caught up in the win/lose perspective, I lose sight of what I hope are my motives, and then revert into a playground "you pushed me, so I am going to push harder back" mentality.

I don't always do that, but it happens enough to frustrate me.

Personally, I "win" if I can keep my focus on the truth and not confuse my love for the truth, Jesus, with an infantile, high school debate mentality.

Don't misunderstand me, debate, argument, and challenge help me to find truth. It's the "firing range" mentality in argument that shoots me down.

I think The Lone Stranger nailed it in his previous post.

It has never been my aim in posting here at texags to "win" an argument. I doubt that anyone has been convinced to change their beliefs as a result of having "lost" an argument here. . I have attempted, not always successfully, an exposition of my faith, my beliefs, my take on things, and to correct misunderstanding. If there is a win it will have been in Judaism being better understood by those whose attitudes have been shaped by suspicion, prejudice or a simple lack of knowledge. Entering into a win/lose, right/wrong argument where religion is concerned is a useless dialectic.

To borrow the book title, you don't have to be wrong for me to be right.

Peter and Paul debated in scripture... Paul "won" the debate, but in reality, we all won. And I think that is true here on texags.

Except of course, for the meaningless stupid posts.
