I got to thinking, about how we are in the process of resurrecting Bonfire, i started thinking about other traditions. What other traditions have died out that youve seen in your lifetime (not saying Bonfire has, obviously)? But things like alternating rows for Saw Em Off. Stuff like this. What has gone? And are there some youd like to see come back?

I don't know if not walking on the grass at the MSC is a tradition or out of respect, but I've seen it happening more often. Just seems like no one cares about the spirit of A&M in general. What would Sul Ross and Rudder say about all the "changes" that have happenened over the years? It wouldn't be what they expect.

People getting off the buses always cut through the grass. Thoughtless.

What are some traditions that have completely fallen off the thought of everyone?

Did you know that at one point all the fish in the Corps had to "whip out" to everyone they passed on the sidewalk going to class and not just people in the Corps? And the Howdy was universal and strong. Fish Day is gone, where the fish and the sophmores switch place on April 1st.

And we did not have "Orange Coolers" in Kyle.

We were required to attend Football Games. IN uniform. And would have to hold our hands up and holler Yeaaaaa all the way from where our outfits broke up after the march in to our seats.

Walking on the Grass at the MSC? Pinky would have had a stroke.

I bet no one on campus now has seen a kk (Campus Cops) in the fish pond filled to the brim with water. Or seen a car full of girls carried up the steps of Sibisa to the landing. Or seen a water fight with five thousand participants (controled by walky talkies and lines of people passing fifty gallon drums across the quad), with one dorm filled eight feet deep in water.

Or gone on a Corps trip and marched down Congress Avenue.

I bet no outfit on campus right now has a pet alligator. Ours was named Lurch, and we had a modified dog leash which we used to walk him to Duncan and back. Oh yes, he ate at Duncan, and had junior privilidges also. Well, actually, he was Butch Baldridge's, as he was the one who brought him back from La.

I bet no one has shot prexies moon in over thirty years.

Lets not confuse traditions with things that happened. I mean we've had everything from a dead deer sitting on a toilet to cows in our dorms, but i wouldn't consider it a tradition. We did slaughter our pet duck at cut this year.

Are you referring to that incident that happened in 2000?

er, for those of you who are not aware, outfits in the Corps have names. Now mine was Huslin One, and our tag line was Second to None, the Best D*** Outfit on Campus. Which it was from 1963 to 1999. 69 is my class year. That means that I showed up on campus in September 1965. Ergo, 69huslinone. As for the rest, well, water fights were a tradition. They really were.

My dad cut off the water main handles and blew up some toilets of some dorm in the corps @63, water was spilling out of the windows, so I believe the water thing..

Remember the eternal flame that used to be on the outside of the old horseshoe? When they started buiding The Zone, it went away and never came back. Guess nothing is really "eternal" after all.

That eternal flame was a gift from my class '83. What a waste of money that was.

Viking Night was outlawed while I was @ A&M.

Northside dorms descending on the Commons in grodes and eating with your hands. Humping-it to northside dorm yells and typically getting into a food fight in a dorm-on-dorm free-for-all.

Last one was in Spring of 1993. Tame one in Fall of 1993. Outlawed after that.

Other things done quite frequently in my time were the Sbisa traditions. Yelling "Pick-it-up" whenever people dropped something, Sbisa napkin balls, and Sbisa yell. They started declining while I was in school and I do not know if they experienced a revival or not.

Ah, Viking Nights . . . if I am not mistaken, there was a Viking Night a few weeks ago. I remember reading about it in the Batt.

Is All-U night still around? It turned into a riot a few times while I was there '91-'95. I remember all of Northside joining together to take the rocket from Dunn. It was a massive brawl. Unfortunately, we didn't get it.

Is All-U still going on, I have not heard a word about it in a couple years, I don't know how it could disappear so easily.

Still done.

Sbisa napkin balls,

Banned, but people still throw them occasionally.

and Sbisa yell.

Nonexistent.

Also, I haven't seen anyone do pushups on the tables in a while.

Man, this brings back memories... "Pick-it-up".. Sbisa napkin balls... Sbisa yell.. Viking Nights.. Sbisa fork pounding on the tables in unison (War Hymn).. All-U night. Groding in the quad..Those were the days. Thanks everyone for the memories.

leknerd2004: Just because Lechner doesn't have anyone doing Sbisa Yells doesn't mean they still don't go on. The 3 major Bonfire dorms still do it during the Fall.

Well, we did have a hold of it before the Kampus Kops broke up the fight. Given just a few more minutes it would have been OURS.

Funny thing is, even after all of that, the Dunn guys became the closest friends Walton had out at Bonfire. I even talk to those guys more than I talk to my own crew chief brothers. That's kind of sad, really.

I think they got rid of it. Don't know why.

My sophomore year ('02-'03) there were some problems when some Walton guys tried to get the Hobby Hall banner. Hobby is co-ed, and the girls had the banner. A couple of girls got a little bit beat up, and ResLife didn't look kindly on it. I don't know if that's the only reason why it's not back, but I have a feeling it has a share in it. Now we have Gig'em Week during move in, instead. Doesn't really take the place of All-U.

Pushups at morning formation. I remember the water fights. Viking night. DG as a guys dorm. FHK was all women, damnit, and the view was much better from the fourth floor back then. Howdy was much more prevalent. Elephant walk was about killing zips, not a big love fest. Pulling out had some repurcussions from the upperclassmen. Grode sandwich was ambrosia following cut. Headlight load. All U night. Yell practice was in the horseshoe.
