Nothing new. They send out a nearly-identically worded letter in 2003.

"risky behavior"... I'm sorry, when a title makes me think of frequenting a bordello I just can't help but lose all respect for what I happen to read in conjunction with it.

interesting timing though... yesterday in Sbisa there were printouts listing (specifically) everything not to do, "Do not throw napkins. Do not throw food. Do not make a mess. Do not yell. etc..." But I'm sure thats just coincidence.

As pointed and directed as this email is and as much as it pisses bonfire people off, I would be interested in hearing official answers to the questions they're posing there. It's extremely unlikely that I will, but are those not legitimate questions that MANY students will not ask themselves before participating or not?

If all the questions can be answered positively, then massively reply. If not, then maybe *****ing about it is maybe just a veil to hide your own shortcomings. If the former is true, than an email like this could be a good thing for bonfire.

downloading copyrighted material

Straight from the last question. Yes, because SB makes all the fish and leaders download movies and music illegally.

We got the same message last year, except it was in the form of a one page handout that went under everyone in Hart Hall's doors. Funny enough, our fish laughed this one off, and as we were ripping into it in our pit, some passer-by's inquired as to what was going on, and we might've gotten a few new people involved. If anything, it's something to get a good laugh from and ignore.

I get what square is saying. And I think that the majority of the points they make can be answered positively if they were applied to SB. I know that we already tell our fish a lot of those things when they get curious, though maybe we don't spend so much time discussing insurance policies...

One point though, "Is the group affiliated with Texas A&M University? If not, how can the event(s) be an Aggie tradition or build positive Aggie Spirit?" Thats just ridiculously pointed and doesn't even really make sense - lots of things build Aggie Spirit that aren't formally connected to the university. As a bit of a history lesson, Bonfire, Muster, Rev, Yell Practice, and a host of other traditions that are "affiliated" were originally student started and the university incorporated after the fact.

Found this from last years discussion on the Risky Behavior email.

Line by line comparison between this letter and the letter sent in 03, when reslife wasnt afraid to openly state what they were attacking.

tomdoss, thanks for posting that. After reading what they sent out in previous years, this latest letter does seem more tame. I still say that this should be used as an opprotunity to communicate to fish and others the history of SB, why the university can't comment on it (positively), and generally be used as a "let's make sure our stuff is together" before the year progresses too far.

Also, I could be pulling at straws, but some of the language used sounds like the university is trying to uphold Dr. Gates statement of noncomment towards Bonfire while court proceedings are ongoing... But not be so blatantly against an "unaffiliated" organization.

If there is some kind of accident at Student Bonfire, the university can document that it was trying to discourage the practice. This is mostly for legal and public relations purposes.

This letter was scheduled to come out before the school year started. You'll see another such letter next year, and every year until Bonfire comes back to campus. Don't think much of it; I guarantee nobody in the Residence Life department put much passion into writing it.
