At his peak Garth was a better entertainer. He has written most of his own songs, and there are some good ones there. I would say that he is responsibe for the pop-izing of country music, however.

But George personifies country. He's just a vocalist, but he (or his producers) had a knack for finding great songs, and he has done good things with songs that would only be mediocre in the hands of others. If you were to tally up songs, you'd find many more classics in George's column (even if adjusting for number of years in the industry).

Verdict: Garth is the better performer/entertainer, George is the better singer.

George Strait doesn't write his own music. I remember one time I was going through his big box set that came out in the 90s and I don't think he wrote a single song in that 4 CD set.

I agree and for this I will never forgive Garth Brooks. Give me George.

But Garth also saved Country from the 80s. The 80s were killing country music. I don't like the current state of country (I bet I haven't listened to a country station in years) but that has a lot more to do with producers and radio than Garth.

That was my point in calling him a good vocalist. I was saying they are good at finding good songs written by others.

Mine $.02: where is Garth now? George has been producing hits in the better part of three different decades.

George Straight holds the record number of #1s on the Country top 100, not to mention the 31 other top ten songs.

I'm a big fan of Garth's music but GS is the absolute hands down best country music musician of all time.

Garth retired so that he could spend time with his family. He said he won't put out another album until his girls graduate. Nothing to bash on if you ask me.

I really think you gotta give George credit though. He was able to maintain his life and still have a huge career. He probably spends 2 weeks a year in the recording studio, puts on about 20 concerts a year, and spends the rest of the time ranching and hangin out with the fam.

George, and it's not even close.

Garth did a lot to popularize country music and bring it back to the mainstream, but except for "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)", his catalog of songs is his nowhere near the caliber of George's.

Let me get this straight Garth Brooks saved country music in the 80's.

I take George over some okie every day and twice on Sunday.

there was plenty of good country in the 80's
Clint Black
Restless Heart
Shenendoah
Alabama
to name a few that were doing fine before Garth.

That said Garth puts on a very good show live.

George Strait has been as consistent as any artist that has had a long career. He has not had a decline in success for twenty six years. Brooks first album was in 1989 and by 1999 he was basically out of the picture. Many will say that he retired, which he did, but late in his career his success drastically dropped of with his releases like "Wrapped Up In You" and what not. Garth Brook's career was HUGE for about eight years or so. Brooks is a performer and Strait is a singer. It is hard to compare the two artists. They are two of the biggest artists in country music history but Strait edges out Brooks. There is a reason he is referred to as King George.

Whoa...I agree with your point, but your logic is flawed. Brooks's last album, "Scarecrow" sold 5 million copies. Strait hasn't had an album sell even 2 million copies since the same time, and hasn't had sales as big as Brooks since the "Pure Country" album in 1992. Total he has sold around half of what Brooks has sold.

I am more so speaking about quality of music being released. Album sales can be a skewed statistic...Britney Spears sold millions of albums.
