In my attempt to address a few issues people seem to have with what the new trailer implies - in the "Superman Returns Trailer" thread, it was suggested I start a new thread explaining some plot spoilers dealing with the movie. So yeah, if you don't want to know what happens, don't read any further...
Seriously, **HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD**
- Essentially, the gist of the movie is this... Superman has been gone for five or six years, having left to visit what remians of Krytpon in hopes of finding any survivors (and possible answers to his past).
- In Superman's absence, Luthor breaks into the Fortress of Solitude and steals that crystal thing - the same one that Clark used to create the Fortress in the first movie.
- Luthor's plan is to use the crystal and create a "New Krypton" (what it's refered to as in the movie), which is essentially a new continent - HIS continent (if you go to the 2:05 mark in the trailer, there's a rendering of it on that map between Lex and Lois).
- Where you see Superman land with a thud (at the 1:59 mark) and Lex open his arms to him - THAT'S New Krypton. Essentially, it's just a gaint grey land mass with the same geometric features as the Fortress. I'm not sure if it reaches the size Lex plans, or how much it ruins, but I do know we'll see earthquakes in Metropolis as a result.
- As for the kid and all that - the kid IS Superman's. This will be THE big surprise of the film. Like I said, Superman has been gone for five or six years... and the kid (Jason) is roughly, and coincidentaly, that same age.
- Lois is dating - not married to - Richard White (played by James Marsden, X-Men's Cyclops), nephew to Perry White (the chief at the Daily Planet). "Their" son will be addressed in the film as being had out of wedlock.
- I realize, per Mallrats, that the idea of Superman having a kid - or even sex with a human for that matter - seems somewhat impossible. Then again, it IS Mallrats, and Superman can probably control his sperm just as good as he can control the strength of his handshake. Although even I'm still not sold on the idea of this whole Superman having a kid thing, I'm sure Singer & co. will have some kind of reasonable way of explaining it. So yeah, Superman is NOT a homewrecker as the trailer somewhat suggests.
- This "big reveal" will happen either one of two ways. More probably, it'll be when the kid reveals and uses his powers to stop Lex towards the end of the film. I won't go into details, but this scene will either be extremely cheesy or likely only somewhat decent. All I'll say is this - I just can't see the picking up and slamming down of a piano by a little kid looking all that great and met without at least a few laughs. Then again, it may work. We'll see. The other way this big reveal will happen is rooted more in speculation. It's known that at one point, most likely towards the end of the film, that Superman ends up in the hospital, on his death bed, with the citizens of Metroplis rallying for him in the street below. He MAY need a blood transfusion - or something along those lines - and low and behold, the only "person" with a blood match is... his son.
(Keep in mind, Singer omitted Jean Grey's death from the shooting script for X-Men 2. In the same way Lucas filmed the "Luke, I am your father" scene in Empire with different dialogue so not even the crew would know, Singer could have done something similar with this whole kid thing. But honestly, I just don't see any other reason for the kid to exist in the story).
- And finally, to address the supposed "anti-American" sentiments in the trailer like the "Truth, Justice and all that other stuff" and "We don't need a savior" lines... the writers are simply commenting on the status of America today. Both in the movie and even in the real world, this is a society that has moved on in Superman's absence, a world that doesn't embrace the same values Superman once stood for before he left. THAT'S what's at the heart of the movie - how Superman, a dying breed of somewhat conservative American values, copes with a world that has moved on without him. It's an excellent way to make a statement on the literal, real world society seated in the theater watching this film. We live in a more liberal, morally-challenged world and how does someone who still stands for "Truth, Justice and all that stuff" make an impact on that world today? If anything, this movie is pro-conservate and definitely pro-American.
ANYWAY, I guess that's about it. I'm not promising this movie is going to be great or anything - it could very well suck. I just wanted to set the record straight on a few things. But if anyone has any more questions concerning the plot, I'll do my best to answer them...
