I agree on 4,5 and 6. But for 1-3, I'd put:

1) Star Wars - The special effects at the time were incredible.
2) Revenge of the Sith - did a great job of connecting the dots while still being entertaining
3) Empire Strikes Back - another great movie.

Definitely Episodes 4, 5 and 3 are the best.

1) Star Wars
2) Revenge of the Sith
3) Empire Strikes Back
4) Return of the Jedi
5) Phantom Menace
6) Attack of the Clones (wish it were a better title - storyline was choppy)

I still don't see why everybody hates Phantom Menace that much.

It was that stupid Jar Jar character.

But I agree, it wasn't that terrible. I liked how Qui Gon "discovered" Annakin. The pod race was pretty cool, as was Darth Maul's double-sided light saber.

I didn't care for Phantom Menace that much because of the Jar Jar crap and the pod racing wasn't that interesting to me. Imagine if Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars movie ever shown....do you think it would have caught on? The way it was made, i doubt it. Even if they decided to make a sequel after it, Attack of the Clones probably wouldn't have given it any more lift...and i wonder if they would have ever reached a third movie.

Bottom line: less love story, more violence and bad guys makes for the better film.

1. Revenge of the Sith
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. A New Hope
4. Return of the Jedi
5. Attack of the Clones
6. The Phantom Menace

Regarding the statement if the first Star Wars had actually been The Phantom Menace, I'd have to say that there likely would never have been another Star Wars movie. The reason is that I don't believe that movie created an emotional connection with such a mass audience as did A New Hope. Without that (and the resulting box office receipts) there really couldn't have been another.

Lucas may seem numerically-challenged but telling the entire story in the manner he did was the best thing he could have done.

I actually probably like Sith and Empire as much but I'll take the darker of the two as my favorite, and I'd put Jedi and Clones on about an even keel as well (those dad-gummed Ewoks)!

No real Star Wars fan calls it A New Hope. Revisionist history, man.
