They recorded it shortly before he died. Actually, I think in reading the liner notes, he left the recording studio, went home and never left his house again and died like 2 months later.
We used to tell the bartender/dj at the Chicken that it was Bob Wills day in Turkey,Texas and could they play some of his tunes. That guy must have thought it was Bob Wills day every other week, but he always played a song or two for us. Of course, they're always playing Bob Wills at the Chicken!
My grandparents lived in Ft. Worth in the late 20's and early 30's and at one point during that time they lived on the same block as Bob Wills and his wife and even sold them an extra mattress that they had. Anyways, this was before Bob made it big, my Grandad played the mandolin and sat in with him occasionally on gigs and jam sessions before they got their big radio deal and became Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. My grandparents were also friends with Herman Arnspiger, who was a guitarist and member of the Texas Playboys and actually named their first son after him.
