Discuss. Now I'm no music critic, but Eminem's "Lose Yourself" 171 songs ahead of Michael Jackson's "Beat It"? Come on now.

I read the sidenote about how they were rated. I'm still not sure what factors were used other than popularity. Also, Eminem's Lose Yourself was only 2 behind the first appearance of Johnny Cash (Folsom Prison Blues) which I disagree with. I also don't agree that John Lennon's Imagine should be the highest Beatles tune. Is this collection available together on CD?

I don't expect much from RS, but remarkably, about half the songs in the top 50 aren't even good.

Gave the list a quick once over. Seems to be a fairly diverse list, maybe you can complain that the vast bulk of the songs are pre-80's. I'm sure if I took a closer look I'd find all kinds of things to quibble about, but since The Ramones got some love, I will not complain too much. Imagine at #3! Sorry I hate that song. It might deserve to be on the list but hardly that high.

9 out of the top 10 are late 50's or 60's. Prima facie evidence the list is BS.

I gave it a look but don't think I saw American Pie by Don McLean. It ain't my favorite but I would have it my top 500.

Might have had some Jimmie Reed in there as well.

The Nirvana love fest still amazes me...

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" is Top 500 but no way Top 9...jmo

I'd say about 1/2 of those should be on there, but in a different order. There's definitely a lovefest with certain artists like The Who & the Stones on that list.

looks like they're also giving more credence to "influential" songs or songs that had other cultural significance.

I guess only one top-100-worthy song has been produced in the last 15 yrs. Come on. That wasn't even Nirvana's best.

Also, is it 500 greatest songs or 500 greatest rock&roll songs? (I don't think Patsy Cline was a big rock&roller)

If it is the former, then this list is totally bunk.

Beatles 23 songs
Stones 14 songs
Doors 2
Clapton 1
Prince 6

Ok, this list makes complete sense.

Eminem also had more songs than Madonna.

I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

They got the Beach boys "God only Knows" at 25. I didn't think it would be that close to #1. I'm glad though, it's a great song that many people my age have never heard.

Welcome to the Jungle is at 467! Travesty!

God Only Knows was on the boogie nights soundtrack.

I don't know either but I was a little surprised at some of the choices. The Doors had 2 songs on the list "Light My Fire" and "The End". "The End" is one of the 500 best ever. Huh?

"The End" is Top 200 or higher. That was one powerful song when it was released and still is...

There is one glaring omission and that is

"Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers in 1968.

Great song then and now...

Oops, my bad. I guess I don't have the attention span for eleven minute songs if I'm not stoned. Give me Peace Frog any day.

The Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy - 499?!
I totally disagree.

Where's "Are you Ready?" - Hank Jr.?
It looks like a Beatles love fest to me - only the most overrated band in history...

Beatles Love Fest? Maybe...

Overrated. I disagree. Their cultural phenomenom and their later music are/were revolutionary and changed the music industry in my not-so humble opinion.

Folsom was not the highest Cash song. They had I Walk the Line a lot higher than Folsom.

It is harder to dismiss this list after you've see some of the names of the voters:

Marty Balin
Kurtis Blow
Brandon Boyd
Solomon Burke
T Bone Burnett
David Byrne
Jim Capaldi
George Clinton
Elvis Costello
Phil Everly
Art Garfunkel
Billy Gibbons
Berry Gordy
Jerry Harrison
Warren Haynes
James Hetfield
k.d. Lang
Loretta Lynn
MC Lyte
Ray Manzarek
Roger McGuinn
Joni Mitchell
Tom Morello
Ozzy Osbourne
Joe Perry
John Popper
?uestlove
Marky Ramone
LA Reid
Robbie Robertson
Bob Rock
Boz Scaggs
Fred Schneider
John Sebastian
Slash
Paul Shaffer
Maureen Tucker
Jeff Tweedy
Jerry Wexler
Brian Wilson
Mary Wilson
Peter Wolf

While artists from the last 15-20 years are grossly underrepresented, you have to respect the opinions of a group like that!

Hetfield's the only one I'd trust on that list. And even he has a tenuous grasp on what the hell he's talking about.

No way that "Sitting on the dock of the Bay" doesn't make the top 5, they have it at twenty eight BS. Buddy Holly's first song to make the list is "That'll Be the Day" at 39 "Rave On" should have been in the top 10. Louis Armstrong's version of "It's a Wonderful World" also should have made the first page.
