This HBO documentary, released today to honor the 25th anniversary of "Band of Brothers," is a must-see.

Lots of interview footage of the original Easy Company that wasn't shown in the series, and of course interviews with the actors today and how the show impacted them.

It's very well done. Highly recommend.

Also, every time I watch BoB I'm amazed at the casting and how close they got to the actual looks and mannerisms of Easy Company.

I've always been fascinated by the casting process and whoever handled this knocked it out of the park. The actors not only looked and sounded like their real-life counterparts; they also worked really hard to capture their essence and make a series they would be proud of.

ETA: I know Damien Lewis is English, but it's still a shock to hear his real voice.

So many of the actors were English, which I think was required to film in England.

Shout-out to Professor Todd Brereton who assigned this book to those of us taking US Military History as a humanities elective in 1993. Then HBO did an amazing job with it.

Man...just reading your post (without watching the video) sent a wave of emotion over me remembering the first time I saw that scene. When he has to tell them to go back in....ugh.

Found out later that my wife's grandfather had to help care for camp prisoners similar to this when he was a doc in the Army during WW2. Can't even imagine.

I do. After I read it in '93, I loaned it to my brother-in-law who was in the 82nd Airborne at the time (and later a reserve in the 101st - retired recently after 40 years between 12 years of full-time and 28 of reserve). It's pretty well worn, but it's on a shelf in my office right now.

One related addendum about my BIL is that in 1994 when he was in the 82nd, he got to participate in the 50 year reenactment and jumped into Normandy. Then a French family hosted him and a couple of his soldiers for dinner and overnight. He'd read the book just before it; just brought even more meaning to the jump knowing more details of these brave men.

Story on that 50 year reenactment. 19 of the guys that jumped in the 50 year anniversary were guys that jumped on actual DDay, along with 22 other WWII paratroopers. What a special group of tough old birds. Then 500 active troops followed, which my BIL was in

In any case, I'm really glad HBO did this Legacy revisit, but I feel a pit in my stomach when watching the interviews that those guys are all gone now. The world owed them a debt that can never be repaid.

Started watching this today. Such an amazing production and everything was done so well. Those guys were definitely heroes and their stories are amazing. I loved hearing Buck's actor talk about the best thing was getting the hug from Buck after they saw the production. Amazing.

I didn't realize BoB originally aired right before 9/11, so watching this today hit extra hard

I'm glad you reminded me. I've watched the series several times over the years and got to take a Band of Brothers/World War II Museum/Traveling Aggies trip on their journey two years ago. We had two of the actors with us, Ross, McCall, who played Liebgott and Shane Taylor that played Doc Roe. They were both such lovely people and we got so many inside stories as well. One of the best trips of my life.

I've been seeing a lot of social media showing the group together again. Most of them have aged very well.
If you don't have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me.

When the documentary was over it just rolled into band of brothers and I didn't stop it

I have a BoB rewatch on tap. I've actually only ever watched it once and my wife has never seen it. We own the blu-ray set so just need to commit to it.

I had seen most of it years ago but I queued it up for a rewatch when Masters of the Air came out. My BF had never seen it. It holds up so amazingly well. There are some special effects with the planes that give away when it was made, but otherwise it is timeless.

I've said here several times that it's one of the few shows/adaptations that is better than the book.

My sophomore year at A&M was the year BoB came out and 9/11. The whole corps saw the Day of Days episode on the big screen at Rudder. Later that fall there was WWII conference/lectures at the Bush School and since I was taking a couple of military history course with Dr Linn we got to go. I have my copy of BoB autographed by Ambrose sitting in my book shelf with a card signed by George and Barbara Bush (who were there).

Yeah, I finished the documentary and then the next day started a rewatch. Maybe my fifth time? I've lost count.

It never gets stale.
