Somehow I was thinking about Boyhood over the weekend - so I watched it on Netflix. I had watched it in the theaters when it came out in 2014 but not since. My 2 kids were younger then and are now grown adults and on their own.

Wow, this movie really hit home at this stage of my life. The movie shows typical highs and lows of growing up. Not only does the boy grow up, but so does his sister - and their 2 parents.

Linklater would understand. The passage of time has changed my perspective, not only for the movie but on life in general.

Hell yeah. This movie has aged so well and, in my opinion, will continue to just get better as years go by. Honestly an impossible movie to make and Linklater nailed it.

Crazy that he didn't win Best Director for that.

I had to look up who did, it was Alejandro G. Iñrritu Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), which is great so no huge complaint.

But what's crazy is that the other three nominees were:
  • Bennett Miller Foxcatcher
  • Wes Anderson The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Morten Tyldum The Imitation Game
Of those three, two of them (Miller and Tyldum) have released a total of ONE feature film between the two of them since those nominations in 2015!

Tyldum released Passengers (2016) and then has been directing TV, and Miller, after coming off a heater of a streak (Capote -> Moneyball -> Foxcatcher) hasn't released a feature since!

I saw it on a plane somewhere over Asia a decade ago and I thought it was incredible.
Everything the kid goes through, the characters, etc.

And as somebody who lived away from Texas for a long time, the movie was very Texas and very NOT Hollywood. So that made it even more special.

Because of that movie, I made it a point to drive through Alpine and have lunch there at the end of 2024 on my way back from Big Bend.

Yes, it is sad. But it's glorious, one of the best movies of this century IMO.

The ability to pull this off is a feat in itself. Getting the actors to come back each year they filmed couldn't have been easy.

The main kid actor isn't great, but it is hardly a detriment to the level of the movie.

It's about death. The death of each phase of childhood and life and how you never get it back. So yes it's depressing.

I got a strange feeling of hope from this film.

The final scene with Mason on his first day of college hanging out with a girl he had just met showed me that he was going to be okay. All the bad stuff that had happened with the string of terrible step-fathers had not ruined him. I loved that along the way there was always someone in his life (his mother, his father, a teacher, etc) who tried to help him find direction and get through the mess. Children can be incredibly resilient, and Boyhood showed that.

There's a scene near the end. He's headed off to college. Mom breaks down before he leaves. She's struggling with upcoming empty nest. Your wife might relate

Great movie. I got a lump in my throat when he was going to HS graduation because I felt like he was a part of my family since I saw him grow up.

Wow, I had young kids when this movie came out, and they've since gone through all the ages represented in the movie, including first days of college. I love this movie, but I couldn't rewatch it because it was a strong reminder of time slipping away. Now that my kids are past the last year of the movie, maybe its time to try again.

I have videos of my kids growing up through the years. I thought those videos were so important at the time, but I have a hard time watching them. Bittersweet is the only word I can think of. (a mix of happiness and sadness, a pleasant memory tinged with regret).

I wonder if that feeling is the reason Boyhood wasn't a bigger deal? People without kids may see nothing more than a mediocre drama with a unique twist, and people with kids have such a strong bittersweet reaction that no amount of dopamine can counteract it.

Also, I think Linklater provides an incredible insight into Texas culture that many of us have lived. Many of the characters in the movie, we all probably know 10 people just like that.

It's a good movie, and my wife and I watched it when it first came out (our son was 2 at the time), and I was thinking of revisiting it now, as my son is 17 and about to head into his final year of high school. Part of me is dreading him even starting school in a few weeks, as this will be the last of many things (last time he plays football, last time he wrestles, last "first" day of school, etc.). We are super proud of him, but it is bittersweet.

Our daughter will start high school this year, so we still have one at the house, but time has moved way too fast. Even realizing that this movie came out in 2014 feels so surreal to me, as it feels like I was just listening to that song from the end of the movie yesterday. Time is a thief.

The most incredible part to me is they didn't have a full script just a rough outline. They would meet up every couple of years for a few weeks and spend a day talking about what they had been up to and just did it on the fly.

Ha yep, I have got a 5 yr old girl who is growing up WAY too fast and who I am having the summer of my life with (pool every afternoon etc). I wish I could freeze her in time, or slow it down somehow. I don't know if I could handle this movie. I can barely handle the scene in "Interstellar" where he leaves Murph.

Boyhood is a top 5 movie of the 2010s. Hell or High Water and Infinity War may be the only 2 movies I have above it.

I agree. In 2014 I was a newlywed, big Linklater fan, but this really didn't do it for me. I enjoyed the making of it, the commitment, and the scenes shot in Austin, but I couldn't stand Mason. I still don't really. Just leaning into the loner, messed-up kid trope too much. But as a father, this movie is a masterpiece and captures the changes all families face or could face in time.

Here's something else I loved about Boyhood.

The scene where the dad's in-laws present Mason with a shotgun and a Bible for his birthday. This is quintessentially Texan. In the hands of another director, these rural people would have been made fun of. But Linklater treats them kindly, if not lovingly.

It's one of my favorite movies of the last 20 years, and it's a real shame it win Best Picture.

The sheer ambition of getting this movie filmed should've gotten it more love.

Watched the trailer, the roof being open at Minute Maid Park is just too big of a plothole for me to overlook. Hard pass on this one.

Love Hawke. Seems like a guy that just loves acting, and was never interested in being a movie star.

The Before trilogy, Boyhood, and so many other movies of his are some of my favorites.

Hell, Sinister is one of the best horror movies of recent years.

check out Blue Moon from last year. Linklater directs Hawke playing a lyricist whose career has imploded. Semi-true story.
