To all, I am trying to remember a song that I heard from the late '60s (I think) that was sung by a black male singer. The song was about his father, who was dying, telling him (the son) that he was going to have to take over and be the man of the family. It was a medium paced song but was sung in a sad and soulful manner. I do remember that the singer was not a famous one, but this single did pretty well the year it was out. I know this isn't much to go off of, but it is a great song that I would like to listen to. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

It sounds like you might be thinking of *"Color Him Father"* by **The Winstons** from 1969. While The Winstons were not a hugely famous group, this song was a big hit and won a Grammy. The song is sung from the perspective of a son talking about his stepfather, who stepped up to take care of the family after his biological father passed away.

Claude probably got you with Patches. And if you haven't watched Muscle Shoals, now you have to.

If I'm right, it may be my crowning musical trivia moment. I have neither heard nor thought about that song in a decade or more.

Claude, you are right, thank you very much. I only heard the song twice back in 2018 on the radio but my memory could not bring it up. It is a great song.

Well, I guess I need to watch Mussel Shoals.

Should currently be on prime video. You're about to have a fantastic time reliving music from an era and learning about the man behind that song.

my brother performed that song karaoke at corner bar on new years eve one time.

College kids were there with their parents and once they started to notice what the words are they very slowly turned their heads to the TV with the lyrics until about halfway through the song everyone was watching.

Im still cringing now 15+ years later.
