Heartbreaking, they died within three days of each other.

Must be hard on him, but going within days of your spouse of 66 years has to be the best way to go. Hopefully he finds comfort in that

Very common for couples who are together for that long.

Yup. I forget the name of it but it's sort of a form of a heart attack….found an interesting video on this a ways back see if I can get my hands on it but there is a name for it….

The laman version of this would be what killed Padame in RotS

I had a neighbor and his wife die a day apart. I don't know how long they had been together, but they were both 90+ year olds. It does happen.

It reminds me most of Debbie Reynolds dying the day after Carrie Fisher (her daughter) died back at the end of 2016. Reynolds was 84, Fisher was 60.

The Will to live is a powerful thing. If someone is that weak of body and loses the Will to continue on, it's amazing how the body will give in. Same works the opposite direction. The Will to live can keep people alive longer than you would think.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Essentially a stress induced cardiomyopathy caused by a massive release of catecholamines (adrenaline) that causes myocardial stunning. It's called 'Takotsubo' because the condition leads to the heart resembling Japanese octopus traps.

came here to post the same. Interestingly can happen after other major procedures like liver transplantation.

Basically other "heart" meds you might use for heart failure. Beta blockers, diuretics, sometimes blood thinners. Really trying to mitigate the potential complications and patients can recover.

This happened with my wife's grandparents. When we came home from her grandfather's funeral, I was talking to her grandmother, and you could tell she was 'done.' It's like she stayed alive for him, and after he was gone, she was ready. Not many days later…

I can't give you any science behind it, but I can definitely see it with my parents.

They are both elderly and have had their health ups and down the last few years, especially my father. My mother's mental health and physical mobility definitely track my father's condition. I'm not saying it's going to be within days of each other, but I fully expect them to both go around the same time when it ultimately happens.

Yeah, not citing any studies, just going off anecdotal evidence I've seen in my life. I'm sure I've been told about at least 10-12 older couples this has happened to.

Fortunately for us, my grandmother in Colombia is my last remaining grandparent. She's survived a stroke, triple bypass, and colon cancer, is 86, and lost her husband of over 60 years in 2022. She's still kicking and strong of mind. Strange, because everytime we speak with her, she says that she's ready to go.

Yeah, in my experience, I tend to see it most frequently after massive intracranial hemorrhage.

My hometown historical society just posted an article from 1991 where a married couple of 60 some odd years passed away with in 20 hours of each other. He went first, then she passed with her (from the article, mind you) last words being something to the effect of "oh there you are." and then she was gone.

Even more interestingly, it can also happen due to much more "minor" stressors. The most memorable example I can recall being a priest who hated Christmas so much that he keeled over in the middle of midnight Mass. (Don't worry, he didn't die.)

Both sets of grandparents lived to be married 60+ years, grandmother on one side outlived my grandfather by 10 years and my grandfather on the other side outlived my grandmother by 6 years.

What I've learned, on this thread, is the survivor must not have loved the deceased.

His parents were both pretty remarkable people, and I love how Conan spoke of their home life on his podcast.

From Ruth's obituary:
She was one of only four women in her law school class and was elected vice president of the student government.

Ruth was a law clerk to The Honorable Raymond Wilkins, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (1956-57), and a real estate attorney at the law firm Ropes & Gray in Boston (1957-58 and 1971-96). In 1978, she became the second woman to be a partner at the firm.

The same happened to a sweet older black couple who lived across the street from me. The husband died unexpectedly and three days later his wife passed. Very sad.

Death after 80 is not a tragedy, it's a celebration.

That's a life long lived and most likely well lived. You celebrate a life that long.

Man. I'm not a huge fan of Conan, but as someone with aging parents that is having to deal with the realization (health health issues, both my parents and in-laws) that I need to cherish every moment I can with them, I am sad.

No one is going to make it out of here alive.

Dying peacefully at 90+ within hours of my spouse sounds perfect.
