For some reason today I was thinking of old fun websites, like late 90's early 2000's.
I remember Ebaum's world was the first place I saw Star Wars Kid, which was my favorite internet video for like the first 20 years of the web. Even now I will search for it when I need to laugh.

It took me about 20 minutes of playing around in the way back machine to find the name of the other one that came to mind, but it was thespark.com. They used to have funny quizzes and lots of subversive stuff.

Any other good ones?

Collegehumor.com used to be pretty funny. I was in college at its peak so that probably helped.

We used to love real ultimate power back in the day. It was just one page and never changed, but we loved it in college.

We used to play the "Who's Boobs Is It Anyway?" quiz at work for an afternoon break.

The receptionist could win every time. She read a lot of fashion and tabloid stuff and could recognize the cleavage better than any of the guys.

X-Entertainment (aka X-E) was a great pop culture/comedy website with various articles but what really kept me coming back was the message board that was pretty much a free for all.

At some point in X-E's run, Matt Caracappa (the site owner/content creator) had to shutdown the message board as things had gotten out of control with the mental patients running the insane asylum.

Matt abandoned X-E and now runs Dinosaur Dracula! and has a podcast (doesn't everyone?) The Purple Stuff.

Talk about a blast from the past, I can't remember when the last time I visited Fark. At one point it was my homepage when I logged on. I spent so much time on that site.

EDIT: Holy Crap! It's still active! Well there goes my day.

While it's not from super-early Internet, this thread made me think of Omegle. Just looked it up, and the creator posted a really long letter about why he had to shut it down. Something vague about threats and the opportunities for platforms to be used for crime.

https://www.omegle.com/

Quote:

In recent years, it seems like the whole world has become more ornery. Maybe that has something to do with the pandemic, or with political disagreements. Whatever the reason, people have become faster to attack, and slower to recognize each other's shared humanity. One aspect of this has been a constant barrage of attacks on communication services, Omegle included, based on the behavior of a malicious subset of users.

Quote:

Unfortunately, what is right doesn't always prevail. As much as I wish circumstances were different, the stress and expense of this fight coupled with the existing stress and expense of operating Omegle, and fighting its misuse are simply too much. Operating Omegle is no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically. Frankly, I don't want to have a heart attack in my 30s.

The battle for Omegle has been lost, but the war against the Internet rages on. Virtually every online communication service has been subject to the same kinds of attack as Omegle; and while some of them are much larger companies with much greater resources, they all have their breaking point somewhere. I worry that, unless the tide turns soon, the Internet I fell in love with may cease to exist, and in its place, we will have something closer to a souped-up version of TV focused largely on passive consumption, with much less opportunity for active participation and genuine human connection. If that sounds like a bad idea to you, please consider donating to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that fights for your rights online.

Beat me to it. Loved the site so much I damn near lost my wife over it. When we were dating I thought the site was the funniest thing ever and was trying to show her a bunch of it. She told me later she was questioning if we'd make it after that.

We just celebrated 17 years Sunday
