This band is admittedly not for everyone, and probably a little dark/twisted (and admittedly pretty weird) for most people, but they probably have the most unique sound to come out of the mid 90s metal scene. From Louisiana they have that Bayou sludge sound mixed with some doom and black metal but have a couple acoustic tracks on each of their albums. Throw in a little grunge, thrash, psychadelic and maybe even some industrial sounds in a few places and you get Acid Bath. I recommend starting with their second album Paegan Terrorism Tactics if you want to check them out. Their first album, When the Kite String Pops is much heavier and probably not the best fit for this crowd. PTT probably has more clean vocals than anything else.

I have never listened to a band that I think can really make you feel kind of creeped out or kind of uncomfortable but in a good way, but several of their songs can honestly transport you to some ****ty old southern Louisiana swamp.

The singer has a pretty incredible vocal range and is a legit crooner and went on to do a lot of solo stuff afterwards but doesn't really do anything anymore. He can go from screaming to some incredible clean vocals and back incredibly quickly. They thanked the ghost of Roy orbison in their liner notes which I find funny. I think any fans of grunge will love his vocals. Dax Riggs is his name.

They broke up after thwir bassist was killed by a drunk driver. Unfortunately their record label, rotten records, has a hard on for their stuff being up online and it is super hard to find their stuff streaming, but can be done with enough searching. I would have done some real digging but I am out in the middle of the ocean right now and my internet is lacking, but wanted to post about them while they are on my mind.

Here are their 2 albums. Some may recognize the artwork. Funnily, if you watch the street fighter movie, Raul Julia's character has a knockoff of the clown painting in his lair, which is absolutely freaking hilarious if you know what the painting is.

Seems vaguely familiar....any connection with Crowbar/eyehategod etc from the Nola 90s scene?

Yea same scene. I think they played a lot with eyehategod and actually went on some pretty decent tours although I can't recall specofocally who at this time. Acid bath was from Houma so not far from Nola, obviously. Their guitarist sammy went on to be a founding member of goat***** but dax went in a much more mellow direction and his stuff is really great. He has an amazing voice. Good to see someone else that has knowledge of that era.

Crowbar is one of my favorite bands that I dont listen to much anymore for whatever reason. All I had I gave has one of the heaviest breakdowns of all time. So glad I got to see crowbar live.

I will say that I would be happy to send anyone these two albums once I get back to decent internet with the caveat that you buy it if you dig it.

If you, or anyone, is going to check it out I REALLY recommend listening to the whole albums because one song may make you think they are a certain kind if band just to find out they are something completely different when you listen to another track. It is best to listen to the entire album. IMO, of course.

It is kind of crazy how things like that seem to happen in pairs or sets of 3. There was about 3 or 4 years nearly 20 years ago where I listened to "sonic excess...." nightly to fall asleep. No chance I could do that now haha. Great album though. The Lasting Dose is an incredible song. You should probably give them a spin for old times sake.

I really liked it. Reminds me a lot of Soilent Green as well. Definitely heavy on the NOLA blues/sludge/doom sound. I do like how the singer (Daxx) has a unique voice with range so definitely gives it lots of depth. Like you said, they show quite a range from different song styles. Rhythm section reminds me a lot of Carcass and Lamb of God. Also here some occasional Ministry riffs in there as well. I also checked out Daxx solo stuff which I really liked as well. Great suggestions.

Awesome that makes me very happy you checked it out and liked it. I've been listening to them for 15ish years but for some reason I am on a bender of their stuff lately so figured I would make a post. I listen to PTT in the gym a LOT.

For anyone else that wants to check out dax's stuff:

I hear a ton of Alice In Chains (and some Stone Temple Pilots) influence in his solo stuff.

And for others don't make the mistake I made. There is a House Music band by the name Daxx that I originally thought was him at the very first and thought WTF! That was a huge genre shift

I think you did a pretty good job of picking out some influence and similarities to other bands in this thread. What is wild is they all go in to one band and it all works together to make some very unique music.

I've been on an eyehategod kick lately." Breastfed from a dog" has to be one of the best opening lyric in metal.

At the haunted museum in vegas last weekend and they had the original Pogo the Clown painting and an x/200 signed Kevorkian print of like 6 of his paintings including the album cover. So sick. Best part of the museum.

They just played the metal+beer festival in Denver a few months ago, a 2 day thing, with Blood Incantation headlining the other night.

I'm kinda pissed I didn't go... kids had a basketball game that night or something and I had intended on leaving early to head downtown, but I actually kinda just forgot about it.. Middle aged man problems.

This band is from my birth town.

I didn't know about this show until yesterday when I randomly texted a friend to ask if he had heard of another band that randomly played on youtube music while I was doing some work on my computer. Life is all about luck and timing.

High on fire is playing as well, which is awesome because I have never seen them, but I did get to see Sleep and that was the loudest show I have ever heard. Obituary is playing as well and the oldest hat I own is a beat to hell camo obituary hat that I am wearing today because I am so stoked. Also learned today that my buddy's band Necrofier is playing and I haven't seen them live so that's a nice bonus.

Felt the need to melt my face off so was listening to muhfugging GOAT*****, as one does of course, and came to learn that the guitarist was the same one from Acid Bath who started up GW after AB. Dudes rif***e is just straight rip your ass metal. Had no idea it was the same guy.

Just reminded me of this thread.

definitely wasn't expecting to see an acid bath thread on texags. with a soilent green reference in the replies to boot, that brings back memories. sewn mouth secrets/a string of lies is criminally underrated.

since a few people seemed particularly interested in dax's stuff, its important to note not all of his material since leaving acid bath has been under his name. don't sleep on those other projects though. it's tough to really nail down a genre with him but most of his stuff has a lot of blues influence along with 80s goth (this shows up on some albums more than others, it's there though). so for a quick rundown, in no particular order:

daisyhead & the moon crickets- there's a demo out there somewhere that has a couple early versions of songs that were later released in other projects, but beyond that you won't find much. the audio quality is gonna be rough too. there's a couple great songs though, but i wouldn't start here

agents of oblivion- i believe this was the first band of his to officially release an album after acid bath. just going by technical ability, this might also be the most talented group of musicians he's put together out of all of his post AB projects. they only put out the one album but it's great, and gets better with every listen. one of his stronger efforts lyrically as well.

deadboy and the elephantman- this one is kinda confusing to most people, for good reason. basically there were two totally different versions of this band, and the first version recorded an album called if this is hell then i'm lucky, and it didn't really have much success. years later it was reissued but under dax riggs instead of deadboy. it was a solid album, but they basically broke up and then came the iteration that most people associate with being deadboy- the two piece band with him and tessie brunet. they also related one album, we are night sky, and it was a masterpiece. it's probably my personal favorite of all the stuff he's put out since AB. it might not get you right away but give it a chance. this one even had a little commercial success with the song stop i'm already dead. then tessie left and this project was no more.

dax riggs- his debut released under his own name, we sing of only blood or love, is probably the best place to start for someone diving into his stuff for the first time. this sort of feels to me like it's the album he finally nailed the sound he'd been after his whole career, that dark goth-y blues rock thing he does. and there's not a bad track on it. a few years later say goodnight to the world was released, which is right there in quality with blood or love. i prefer blood or love by a hair but you can't go wrong either way. then for some reason dax didn't release anything for a good 15 or 16 years. he still toured so it was wasn't like he quit music. all that until just last year, he finally put out a new record, 7 songs for spiders. it's really really good, but it's too damn short. after a decade and a half it would have been nice for a longer album, but he proved he is still capable so maybe there will be more coming. he's a unique individual though so who knows. the guy has such crippling anxiety it's a miracle he can even get on stage honestly, but once he does he never disappoints. even the times i've seen him on so many drugs that i question how he's even alive.

anyway, hopefully i didn't forget anything. the guy has so much talent as a singer, i highly recommend checking him out if you aren't familiar. i lost count of the friends that heard me play something and asked who it was, then the next time i see them they're die hard fans. i know i already talked about a good starting point album, but another good entry point might be his covers. some of his shows would be just him with an acoustic guitar doing mostly covers, and i've noticed a lot of people tend to be more easily impressed when they hear him on a song they're familiar with, i guess it really hammers home what he can do for them. they're all over youtube though. he covers everything from leonard cohen, neutral milk hotel, the beatles, the misfits, whoever the hell sings somewhere over the rainbow, it's a pretty long list. this post has already been way longer than i intended so i'll wrap it up with one of those covers than everyone will recognize

edit: cant believe i forgot t-daks and his white plastic soul. nothing significant musically there, and it was short lived, but that name… lol

i'll leave one more, i already shared one that everyone would know, this time i'll go with one of my favorites. the original was a great song but this cover just hits different

Oh and I work on ships and posted a photo of the acid bath show on my group chat with a bunch of random foreign mariners from work and a month later this 55 year old British dude told me he is going to see acid bath when they come through Britain with SOAD. What a time to be alive.

Nope. I live in the midwest, but I'm heavily considering going to Red Rocks in September as well for Ministry and Acid Bath
