Not sure about bands, I know individual performers who have.

Scott Weiland was always back and forth but when he was bad he was really bad. But when he was good he was one of the best.

Jason Isbell. Old stuff is fantastic, but definitely took it to another level once he dried up

I think Keith Urban is a good example
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I would say The Replacements. They were good as drunkards on Sorry Ma, Stink and Let it Be, but as they drank less (read not sober) the albums like Pleased to Meet Me and Tim are among my favorites. I also really like Don't Tell a Soul.

Aerosmith.

Although when I saw them in 78... they banged. When they sobered up, the sound became more polished. I prefer them a little rough around the edges.

Couldn't disagree more. They were a much better band on drugs. They got too poppy once they got sober.

All bands/musicians are better on drugs. Fact.

From a creative standpoint, I agree.

From a performing standpoint however, musicians on drugs range from minor inconvenience to - I sure hope to hell they show up.

I used to run around LA with some guys who were on various combinations of alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and heroin.
  • Alcohol guy would just get out of control and rage from time to time.
  • Marijuana guy would show up reliably for shows but not for recording sessions.
  • Cocaine guy was straight and would brag about how many years he had been sober, until we got back to his girlfriend's condo after the show. That's when I found out his sobriety only referred to alcohol.
  • Heroin guy was always mellow but we never knew if or when he would show up. Remarkably, he always showed up. We did have to delay the start of a couple shows while waiting for him to arrive. On the other side, he was the king of the Irish Goodbye. One night (before Uber), he just left and walked a mile home.
  • Cocaine Dealer guy was always cool and never used anything to excess.
Fun times.

Bonnie Raitt credits him with her getting motivated to get sober herself, and her biggest commercial success came after that point.
