How long do you want to ignore this user?
Looked for a thread on this and was surprised not to find one. I'm home with the vid currently and binge watched this today. Wish I'd known about the book beforehand. What a great series it was. Really enjoyed it.

Watched the first episode but need to watch the rest

Was surprised to see the low critic score on RT

Then realized it's probably because they didn't like that these characters are all speaking in native English. Whatever

Read the book, was slow to start, but ended up ok. I heard the series wasn't that good but I will probably watch anyway with the wife since we both enjoyed the book

Book was great. Very different style of composition and structure, but great story.

I'll have to check the series out when we get Netflix again.

Was also surprised it got a low score. There were a few hard-to-believe moments, but a really powerful performance by Hugh Laurie, and a good one by Mark Ruffalo as well. My wife said the young Marie in the flashbacks is legitimately blind, and she did a great job as well.

If you haven't, I would definitely check out "A Small Light" on Disney Plus. Some of the most compelling television about the Holocaust and people deciding to stand up against oppression that I've ever watched.

Really enjoyed the book but didn't know there was a video. Thanks for the heads-up on that

The main actress is blind. She's also the girl in the flashbacks, they just changed her looks and made her look younger. That's what it seemed like to me anyways..

I would imagine those who don't like it couldn't get by the first hard to see (very dark lighting) episode and bailed. I thought it was very well done.

She's like 6 or 7 in the longer-ago flashbacks. Different actress.

Well the main actress is blind. Not sure about the little girl as well. I was reading about the main actress last night.

Started the series tonight. The book is one of my favorites. I've always been fascinated by WWII and have read lots of books on it, it started me down the path of fictional novels about the occupation and war.

Will definitely check out the one mentioned above on Disney +.

Have also wanted to watch the book thief but have heard mixed reviews so have hesitated renting it.

I read the novel about a year ago, and was interested in watching the adaptation. I think the director took way too many liberties to appeal to a "movie" audience. The movie adaptation was entertaining, and my wife and I enjoyed it. It is in no way comparable to the novel though. So if you've read the book, don't go into it thinking it's an adaptation of a really good book because I think you will be disappointed. Just enjoy it for the entertaining war movie.

Ken Follet has some great historical fiction if you aren't already reading any.

I'm 3/4 of the way through the series and while enjoyable it takes a lot of liberties from the book and is not a very faithful adaptation, IMO.

Also is it just me or is Mark Ruffalo's accent awful and distracting? Its so bad it feels like my drunk uncle impersonating a British accent over dinner, I almost can't stand it.

I don't think you're going to like the last episode. It strayed quite a bit from the novel.

Read and enjoyed the novel when it came out a few years back.

Watched 3 of the 4 episodes and while I like it, it is a bit melodramatic and the accents are killing me. Overall, I'd give it a B- but maybe the finale will push that rating up.

I recommend reading Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan...he has another book called The Last Green Valley that was really good as well, but I preferred the former a bit.

Also a couple non-fictions if you haven't read them yet.....

The Long Walk - Rawicz
We Die Alone - Howarth
The Winter Fortress - Neal Bascomb
In the Unlikeliest of Places - Berkovits

how could a blind woman keep moving around the home after it was blown up by a bomb and there was glass everywhere?

I'm NOT a huge fan of historical fiction but Beneath a Scarlet Sky is one of the best books I've ever read. Double thumbs up from me.

Finished the book not too long ago. Based on the trailers. I'm really worried about the fact that near-30 year olds are playing 15-year-old kids, but I'll watch. I hope it does Volkheimer and Etienne justice.

Edit to add the book earned its Pulitzer. It's a very powerful story about life, love, and how we can't stop time.

I read the book when the trailer came out because a friend loves the book. Book is solid. Series is awful, they basically use the names of characters in the book to tell the story they want to tell. It is honestly like the screenwriter never read the book.

I could kinda tell. The first five minutes of the show have nothing to do with the book, lol.

+1. We enjoyed it. Not the best ever, but worth the watch.

We watched it a few days ago without having read the book. I thought the casting (even if too old) and the acting were good, and the story is compelling. There was a scene in a barn (?) that seemed stolen from "Life is Beautiful" and another scene where Pfennig was struggling way too hard to walk over a 5 foot pile of rubble, but other than that I enjoyed it.
