saw it yesterday at the Kennedy Center.

pretty bad.

entire premise is just singing songs from the past 40 years instead of actual dialogue.

kind of sucked. left before it was over.

Ugh, I hate musicals that utilize songs. Hard pass

You not familiar with the movie?
Or musicals in general?

actually Moulin Rouge had ORIGINAL tunes, at least the one that made Christina Aguilera famous

this Broadway show is just covering every song from the 1980s.

why would a group of actors in 2023 be better at singing an Elton John song than actually Elton John?

the movie was better anyway.

Most of those 'original songs' were just either covers or medleys of existing songs.
That was the whole appeal of the music in the movie.
The only original was the Come What May song, and in fact the song you called out as the only original is actually a cover.

I didn't know any of this going into the movie for the first time a couple years ago. I waited the whole time for Lady Marmalade to show up though. It was practically on repeat back when I finally got MTV2 as a youth.

Next you are going to tell me Rock of Ages was not mostly original music.

The commute from Israel to the Kennedy Center must not be as big as I thought.

I liked Sting's cover of Roxanne better than the Moulin Rouge original, but that's just me.

Saw CATS last week. CAN NOT RECOMMEND. I hate cats and this show had so many cats in it.

I read Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut man years ago and it did not contain many (if any) actual cats. Wish more things were done this way.

I just saw it on Broadway last night (my 4th time to see it, 2nd time on Broadway), and while I can see that not everyone would like the music just being a lot of pop mash-ups, to call it "terrible" is hilarious. The production of it alone is nothing short of spectacular. The lighting, costumes, set design, automation, etc are all stunning to watch. Not to mention the level of talent of the performers. I personally don't get how anyone could watch it and not be impressed, even if you didn't like the music.

This reads like I posted it…. My wife and I saw the original broadway cast twice (front row and can can seats), saw the traveling show in DC, and saw it last summer in NYC again. Love the medleys and it has some of the best performers out there.

Saw it in Paris about 15 years ago. Who'd pay to see it without the tata's?

Even with a wall of boobs it was mind numbing boring after 20 minutes. The only French I speak is <motorboat> and my wife regretted using other boobs as an enticement about 21 minutes into the show.
Staff - take out the trash.

The musical is…very different than the cabaret show in Paris. The musical is a love story that is set behind the scenes of the cabaret.

Lucky! I've seen it with Ashley Loren/Derek Klena, Courtney Reed/John Sforza, and Oyoyo Joi/Casey Scott. All were fantastic, but Ashley takes the vocals to another level and I liked John the best, though I was wanting to see Aaron Tveit because I've seen bootlegs on social media and his opt ups are insane. I wanted to sit in can-can, but they were all sold out both times I went to broadway. Sunday night we sat the third row back from can-can, dead in the center and I actually think those are the perfect seats. Everything is right in front of you.

Saw Courtney on the tour when it came through Dallas. She was in undergrad when I was in grad school almost 20 years ago. I know her a little and my wife and her are friends and keep in touch some. I was blown away by how she's grown as an actress. I hadn't seen her do anything in years. I've seen clips of her Jasmine when she opened that but never got to see her live. I thought she really nailed it in this show and "The Sparkling Diamond" number was fantastic.

I do get what some of the criticisms are above. I was expecting a little more from the music (I had never listened to it before I saw it). But you're right that the production values - set, costumes, quality of performers - was top notch even on the tour so the 'medley' of everything didn't bother me as much as it probably could have.

Can-can was cool but uncomfortably tight seats. My wife was fine. I am only 5-11 but man my legs hurt in there. For novelty it was fun but I'd probably not sit in there again.

Tveit was amazing. I saw him on broadway when he was Fiyero in Wicked. He was my favorite of the Christians. Derek Klena was really good too though. Danny Burstein, Sahr Ngaujah and Ricky Rojas were great in their roles. Karen Olivo was the only one I wasn't as big a fan of. Technically good but didn't mesh with Tveit imo. Ashley Loren was there in the summer last June when we saw it again. She was top notch and the best Satine so I'd agree with your take there.

I believe the term is "jukebox musical"? Generally several songs thrown together without a plot or a story linking them.

Saw it a few months ago in NYC - it was great. I really appreciated the updated mashups vs the movie, thought it was extremely well executed. Production and costumes and energy were awesome. Didn't want it to end.

I tried to see this but my date got us kicked out because she was vaping, taking flash pictures, singing aloud loudly, and grabbing my junk during the show.
