My boys watch this anime and love it so when I saw this on Netflix, I started watching it. It's goofy but I like it! I'll check out a few of the actual anime episodes to see how it compares.

Does anyone watch the anime version and have you seen the live-action version? I'm curious, how do they compare?

Watched the first episode last night. I'm not a huge OP fan or anything, read a bit of the manga and watched about 30 episodes of the anime. I thought it was pretty good. Luffy's attitude seems on point, but his mannerisms don't seem quite right to me so far. Japanese VAs are crazy though, so it would be hard to match that.

This show is great and shot really well. It's like Pirates of the Caribbean and Wes Anderson had a baby.It doesn't take itself seriously and a nice chance to shut off your brain.

Really enjoyed this show. Enjoyed so much I'm going to check out the original anime and all 1000+ episodes.

Six episodes in. It's the best thing on TV right now as far as I'm concerned.

As anime-agnostic Gen-Xers we have really enjoyed the first 3 episodes.
Hope it continues.

I really liked the series and am excited for season 2. I don't know what Netflix's plan for the show is though, with over 1000 episodes of the anime to adapt. Do we just enjoy what we get while we wait for the inevitable cancellation or will they try to come to some kind of abridged narrative end?

I think the best thing about the show is that they don't try to explain things that the manga/anime didn't bother to explain. Yeah, this Marine has whiskers and bunny ears, so what? Are the bunny ears his or is it part of his hoodie and why is he the only marine wearing a hoodie? Doesn't matter, move on.

Reminds me of lemony snickets in the flow and way it is shot

Much better show than I expected

According to my wife those are mouse ears.

The animated series is pretty spot-on compared to the live-action. I'm starting the story arc where the live-action left off it's surprisingly good and I look forward to season 2 of this!

Binged it and really enjoyed it. I didn't know anything about the Manga or anime, so it took me a sec to understand how cartoony it's supposed to be. At the end of the day, I'm one who values characters above all else, and these characters are all very good and likeable.

I'm actually surprised how few have posted about it on this forum.

It even made me want to try the anime, though I've never been a fan of anime. I just hate how bad anime dialogue is, and how slow it always is. The pacing of anime is the absolute worst. This live action show's pacing was very good. From what I've heard, the 8 episodes cover 50-60 episodes of the anime.

Dallas,

I'm an old fart with two boys one just graduated from A&M and one is still in college. They convinced me back when they were in middle school to start watching Naruto. I was like no way, that show has so many episodes, I don't want to start that. Needless to say, I started it and I couldn't stop!

The characters in that show are so amazing and yes there is a main story with lots of filler episodes. I was told to skip the fillers but I enjoyed them because those are where characters are defined. I have watched all the Naruto episodes and I can honestly tell you that it's one of my favorite series of any genre.

I've now started watching One Piece because of the live-action series. If you do start watching anime, give it a few episodes. At first, I was like what the heck, this is cheesy. Now I'm sad to have reached the end of the series.

I just watched ep 1. Wow, it is really good. Given the failures of Avatar (Airbender) and Cowboy Bebop, I am very pleasantly surprised.

The characters are perfect, the effects are very good, the fight scenes are well-done and the story flows. Amazing what can happen when competent people are in charge.

Right? Disney craps out another dull Star Wars series and it gets 2000 posts from people desperately trying to convince themselves that it's any good, while we're still on page one. They are missing out.

from what I understand, this is the same crew that did Cowboy Bebop. They learned from their mistakes and produced a really good vesion of the source material this time.

The creator, Oda I think his name is, was directly involved in making the show as well.

I watched the live action Cowboy Bebop before even knowing it was based on an anime and enjoyed it (hot take - even more so than the original anime I watched after) and don't understand the hate it received.

Watched One Piece live action and enjoyed it also. Started watching the anime and it was much more "anime" than I expected. Wasn't that into it and when I realized the full commitment I decided I'll just stick with the live action for now.

Yeah, I enjoyed the live action Cowboy Bebop, too. I used to watch the cartoon Cowboy Bebop way back when it was on AdultSwim, but that's been so long ago that I didn't really remember a whole lot about it. I figured that's probably why I like the live action while others were losing their minds about it.

I'm planning on checking this out, but every time I see this thread, my mind starts singing "One Week" by the Bare Naked Ladies.

I think the main driver and why I enjoyed this series so much is the main character is just so damn positive...and not in a cheesy way but in a "I know what I want and nothing is going to stop me from getting it." way. I also love how angry he gets when his friends are threatened.

We have so many shows with anti-heroes and yes, rooting for a pirate I suppose is somewhat in that vein but not the way Luffy defines a pirate, which is more of a Goonies, I'm going to find the treasure with my fellow freaks and nothing will stop me.

Can't wait for season 2.

The shows couldn't be more different, but I got the same vibes watching this as the 1st two seasons of Ted Lasso and that must be why

It's refreshing to see a character that's full of positive energy and not in a Homer's neighbor type of way although Ted could sometimes borderline on that Ned Flanders' vibe (I think they even joked about it on the show).

We have way too many shows where it's all just darkness/gloomy BS or straight mindless action with ZERO heart. Need more shows with heart.

I started this show on a whim with no expectations and to be honest not a lot of hope that it would actually be good. I just wanted something light and action oriented and fun. Never heard of the anime before this.

Five minutes into episode 1 I was sure I was going to hate Luffy. He was going to be flat out obnoxious. And when they introduced Zoro, I figured "Here we go, the cliche stoic loner fighter who won't open up to anybody and rebels at being a part of the team (even though they continue to stick around the team)."

But I stuck with the episode for some reason.

By the end my feelings had completely changed. The Luffy actor (and I suppose the writing for his character), had just the right amount of charisma and authenticity to actually pull off the eternally optimistic lead that's actually likeable enough to root for. Like in Ted, as mentioned before, the lead actor manages to pull off the honest-to-goodness good guy routine.

And the Zoro actor (and again the writing for him) manages to pull off charisma in spite of his stoicism. The writing has actually allowed his character to open up just enough to explain why he wants to be a part of the team, why they want him to be a part of the team, and why we as the audience should be rooting for him. He's not just the cliche one-dimensional tough-guy.

All in all, it might not be an all time great show, but its actually got a lot of unexpected heart and appeal as a result, and I'm looking forward to Season 2 (don't **** this up Netflix!)

Can't agree more. This show is better than anything Disney has done, in years.

Its definitely better than any Disney content in the last 10 years. Every episode has at some point one of those moments where you pick up some sort of wisdom or life lesson. The juxtaposition of that seriousness intertwined with the manga-esque nature of it overall is just kind of fresh and entertaining.

Just finished and I'm floored by how good this was. I watched it on a whim with zero expectations and it's my favorite show of the year. Every character was written so well. It reminded me somewhat of Lost will all the back stories of each character.
