If you can't evaluate the special effects, music, sound and video editing, etc., how do you know whether its gonna hit or miss?

My examples would be for instance lorne greene - battlestar galactica, or alec guinness star wars - hit.

Or john travolta in that abortion battlefield earth.

Will Smith passed on Matrix because he didn't "get it".

Granted, you can't blame him when a movie can so easily turn out to be a pile of trash. But man, what a whiff.

Bruce Willis passed on Ghost because he didn't get it and thought playing a guy who was dead was pretty stupid. At the time he was married to Demi Moore so it probably was a good thing he passed on it since I don't think he would have done nearly as good a job as Patrick and their off-screen marriage would probably detract from the movie.

Years later he was approached to play another guy that was dead and he didn't flinch. Smart man.

John Travolta is an interesting example because he specifically did that one because of Scientology. Alec Guiness also pretty famously spoke ill of Star Wars; there's some pretty interesting reading on his wiki page (and in the referenced articles if you care to dive deeper) about his reasoning and continued approach even after the sequels.

Honestly, I think it's like any role and just situational. Of course you have scripts that are just good on reading, or maybe a trusted production company, IP, or director. I've also read plenty of cases of actors who take on roles they're less thrilled about to be able to get passion projects funded. But of course, as with any movie, you certainly won't know if it'll be a hit or not until audiences actually get their hands on it.

Sean Connery reportedly turned down the roles of Gandalf, Morpheus, Dumbledore and John Hammond (Jurassic Park)...all because he didn't get them or thought them to be too fantastical.

Eventually, he came to his senses to said yes to the role of Allan Quatermain (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). LOL.

I like Connery but those all seem like wins for us. The actors chosen seemed to do quite well.

After Zardoz, he probably swore off all sci fi roles.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Outland and Highlander?

Outland is a western that just happens to be set in space.

Highlander is not sci-fi in my definition

True, but it is still science fiction.

If the special effects are needed to make the movie a hit, best to pass on it unless you want the cash.

Alec Guinness wasn't even a big fan of star wars after he made it.
