Think The Blair Witch Project meets Fire in the Sky meets The Da Vinci Code: Kentucky meets Catfish meets Ghost Hunters.
That's basically Hellier in a nutshell, a 2019 digital docuseries I had never heard of until late last week, but am now slightly obsessed with. So far, 15 episodes have aired across two seasons, I've seen the first six, and it's just the creepiest, most ridiculous, most addicting thing ever.
It's about a group of real-life paranormal investigators, who come across as good, level-headed people for the most part… but are also so high on their own supply, treating this case - one that brings them to Hellier, Kentucky, aka the Sh*thole Capitol of the World - like the most important paranormal investigation in history, partaking in some of the goofiest paranormal experiments I've ever seen (but also might be genius, for all I know), and will NOT shut up about "synchronicities," when it's so laughably clear that a number of them are anything but.
Still, the series apparently has a big cult following (no pun intended), and as maddening as this group's beliefs can be at times, I can't stop watching because the case itself, even if it ends up being complete baloney, is so twisty and creepy and compelling, that I have to see how it all shakes out. For what it is (a super-low-budget docuseries), it's incredibly well-done, if not a little too drawn-out and indulgent at times, but overall I can't help but recommend it for anyone who might be interested.
All 15 episodes are currently on Amazon, and I'm definitely curious to hear what others think…
