I saw the anime Cowboy Bebop years ago during a particularly hard time in my life. Hopeless aptly describes my outlook back then. I was constantly looking for distractions and Cowboy Bebob fit the bill at the time.

I watched the first few episodes and they were interesting and unique, but the below scene from episode 5 blew me away and from then on I was hooked. Right when the scene started, I knew this was special . The music, the dialog, the characters, the cinematography, the tension, the patience to let the scene build. I was mesmerized. To this day, I think it's one of the all-time great scenes ever made, and definitely the greatest anime scene ever.

The new live-action Bebop is garbage compared to the anime, and that is probably what prompted me to post this.

I enjoyed the live action for what it was..which granted was not the epic master piece that was the anime. It did annoy me that the kept so true to the anime for Ed but not valentine.

I stopped watching the live-action around episode 4 and started watching the anime again. I'll probably finish the live-action eventually, but it's not easy.

Or Spike (a 50 year-old playing a 25 year-old) or Jet Black (literally made him black because its in the name).

Its not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be, just different. I don't think we've actually ever had a good anime adaption.

And I wish y'all hadn't mentioned Ed cause I'm watching the live action and didn't know he showed up.

I watched both at the same time. They're just different. I don't really think it's possible to completely adapt the anime to live action. Not sure I like going full Ed with Ed all things considered. I think it will be incredibly annoying in live action.

49. He doesn't look 49. Not even close.

I was expecting the live-action adaptation to be terrible based on early reactions but I'm enjoying it a lot. It's a really, really difficult act to follow the anime, but so far I think they've done a pretty solid job (5 episodes in).

In regards to the castings, for Spike they wanted a name actor who is also Asian, and unfortunately, that just doesn't leave a lot of options. I love John Cho and am always glad to see him in things, but I would've probably tried for Steven Yeun (if you've seen Burning, you know he can play Spike), or Henry Golding.

And normally I'm not a fan of race swapping for diversity, but the guy playing Jet Black is perfect. He nails it.

Haven't gotten to Ed but not sure what people were expecting. She's god awful and annoying as hell in the anime too.

I just wanted Valentine to be tall, big boobed and wearing next to nothing.

If that makes me a neckbeard, so be it.

I thought the LA Bebop was great. I always thought Jet was supposed to be black in the anime too, never really considered other people wouldn't have thought that. Mustafa Shakir was the best part of the show though, absolutely nailed Jet so I don't know how anyone could complain about his casting.

Would have rather had a Faye with some bigger yabos and showing more skin, but this portrayal grew on me. Overall I thought she played the character well.

Agreed, Shakir is perfect for the role and I always found Jet to be kind of racially ambiguous in the anime. No problem with that casting at all.

It's bad, it's not just different. And in comparison to the anime, it's horrible. The way the live-action plays the Vicious character is so cringey, I can barely watch it. Same with Julia. And the fight scenes are terrible, sooooooooo sloooooooowwwwwww. Spike and Jet are bearable, Faye is somewhat bearable, I guess.

It could be MUCH better.

I don't mind Cho's age, he's just too short for the role.

"Fights are too slow."

because a 40 YO actor can't imitate an animated character's motions? Especially in a genre that is known for exaggerated fights?

Lolz.

I know nothing of the anime, but have enjoyed it.

I have plenty of book purist angst over WoT. Don't get me wrong.

Bebop is the gold standard of anime series. The scene is the climax of the first act of this masterpiece.

The fight scenes are not slow campared to the anime, they are slow compared to 70s kung fu movies. Compared to the anime, they are like watching grass grow, like geologically slow.

Don't really care about Spike's age, but as someone else said, he's too short and so is Faye. There's a reason it's been canceled so quickly. It's not good.

Obviously I'm not the only one.

Back to the point of this thread, though, the anime series is really good.

I enjoyed the live action a lot. Sucks that it was canceled. I think it will grow in popularity the longer it's around.

Agree on this point. It wasn't bad. Everything was tweaked a little, but in ways I thought stayed true to the characters.

But there has never been a successful adaptation of an anime. It's a dreamy, stylized, medium that gets derided as a "cartoon" when in actuality the required suspension of disbelief allows for a deep, nuanced method of story telling.

Put me down as a fan of the adaptation… disappointing they've already cancellled bc we were looking forward to getting to know the characters better.

I think that Alita: Battle Angle was pretty bad ass and very true to the anime. I agree that it rarely works, but "never" is an absolute....and only siths deal in absolutes.
